President’s Report

CMWO President’s Report by Mike Osborne (2016)

Thank you to those of you who have attended today, we are very grateful for the support that Riccarton Park Racing Club have given us today in providing the venue for our meeting, and over the past year of activities, and we look forward to continuing and growing the relationship.

I’d like to thank our committee members for all their work over the past year. With such great support from you all it makes my job reasonably easy to achieve our goals and aspirations. Hopefully you are keen and willing to continue on for another year, as I am.

We have had a very good year all things being considered. The committee, with quite a few new members, have focussed on adding value and benefits to the membership. We have tried to organise some new events and are working on many for this next year that will open up some opportunities for us to meet more often for social occasions, e.g. Race days, foal walks.

Record-breaking results were the order of the day at the 2016 edition of New Zealand Bloodstock’s South Island Sale proving demand for the Southern product is stronger than ever.

The sale this year was certainly a resounding success for most that either attended as a vendor or purchaser. Certainly as a participant, the enthusiasm from the gallery of bidders was a welcome surprise from the previous recent annual sales. The new venue did improve the over look, feel and atmosphere. We ran a social function; ‘Meet & Greet’ on the Thursday evening that was extremely well received by all with about people 40 attending.

Dramatic increases across the key measures saw clearance skyrocket to 92% this year while the all-important median increased 150% to $15,000 from $6,000 last year. A 121% increase in the aggregate saw total receipts of $1,447,100 taken for the 83 horses that found new homes, leading to an average of $17,435 (up from $10,401 last year).

New Zealand Bloodstock Managing Director Andrew Seabrook was thrilled with the results, and the sales will continue, certainly in the near future with NZB support.

As Mr Seabrook stated, “For any sale to double its turnover and see the average, median and clearance rate increase by such large margins is spectacular.

Branch News Letter.

We did try to get the news letter underway again this year, the main reasoning was to promote the South Island Yearling sales and keep everyone informed of the branch activities. However, it became too difficult to organise and eventually we were too late to go to print, so no news letters were printed this year.

If we were to get this underway again we would have to commit reasonable recourses and money to produce the printed article, funded mainly by advertising. Until we can get a committed group to take on the news letter we will rely on Facebook, our website and emails to promote events and activities.

Race Days and Activities

Most of us are involved in breeding and racing in one form or the other. We had a Breeders Day at Motukara Races late last year as a ‘Try & See’ day. We had 20 -30 members attend the day, the feedback was very encouraging. So we will be doing this again at Motukara and will be planning to have more events and outing of this nature during this season. The thought were that we select some dates of meetings well in advance and attend meetings in each region under our branch. The promotions that we can run during these events are “First Girl Home’, membership promotions and raffles to support activities of the branch. We have, as an example, sponsored a race today at this meeting at Riccarton, funded by a raffle we ran during the weeks that preceded the South Island Yearling sales.

In conclusion

We are all stake holders in a wonderful sport and enterprise; it would make good sense if both the breeders and owners organisations could work more effectively together to generate change. I will continue to work to promote our product, the thoroughbred racehorse so we can all be successful on the day, we all need to do this together for us to be truly successful.

Signed,

Mike Osborne
