NWT Unleashes the Power of BWA Technology

NWT is ready to deploy BWA in town in view of successful trial runs

(1 Dec 2005, Hong Kong) New World Telecommunications Limited (“NWT”) sees the potential of Broadband Wireless Access (BWA) technology as a next generation solution for high-performance broadband service and an alternative to Type II Interconnection in fixed telecommunications services, enabling operators to provide continuous connectivity service to customers. Today, NWT proudly unleashed the capability and reliable performance of the BWA technology, WiMAX, showing the company’s readiness and confidence in deploying this alternative access network technology in town.

As Hong Kong’s leading IP and telecom service provider, NWT has pioneered its evaluation and extensive technical and application testing of WiMAX of 3.5GHz and 5.8GHz high-capacity radio spectrum in major districts in Hong Kong since 2003, including Kwai Chung, Tsimshatsui, Central and Wanchai. In spite of the compact city environment filling with skyscrapers in Hong Kong, the testing results were satisfactory and have successfully shown WiMAX’s capability and reliable performance in data transmission. In addition, the high-speed transmission of WiMAX enables different IP and telecommunications applications including VoIP, video conferencing, VPN and VLAN Tagging. Customers can thus benefit from high performance connectivity, full mobility and wider choices of innovative services within the near future.

“Type II Interconnection regime will be phased out in mid-2008. We see that there is an urgent need for an alternative access network technology which provides ‘last mile’ access. BWA technology, thus WiMAX, is definitely the answer for its broader service coverage and quick-to-deploy characteristics. We do see that it is desirable to deploy BWA technology as soon as possible and no later than 2006. It is critical to deploy BWA in a timely manner in advance of the withdrawal of Type II Interconnection,” said York Mok, Vice President of Marketing, NWT.

Mok added, “We have earned invaluable and enriched experience from planning and implementation of BWA technology. We are confident of launching WiMAX service to connect Hong Kong up in nine months after obtaining the BWA licence. At that time, both residential and commercial customers will be able to enjoy our NetTalk Digital Telephony and NWT bb broadband service via WiMAX.”

Benchmarking the successful rollouts of BWA technology in major cities in the United States, London of the United Kingdom and Sydney of Australia, the governments of Asian countries including Taiwan, Japan and Singapore have already announced their deployment plans of such an innovative broadband wireless access technology. Hong Kong shall quickly deploy BWA technology in the near future to firm its foothold as the Asian telecommunications hub.

WiMAX is a standards-based technology (IEEE – 802.16 series) and a wireless solution in a large scale of the metropolitan area network (MAN). Similar to WiFi, WiMAX allows however higher speed of wireless broadband service with broader coverage for a greater number of users. Operating with a web of base stations, WiMAX provides two forms of connectivity, namely line-of-sight and non-line-of-sight. As a breakthrough in direct broadband data transmission, WiMAX enables the delivery of ‘last mile’ wireless broadband access as an alternative to cable and DSL. What’s more, WiMAX is able to complement with such wired and wireless networks as LAN and WAN. As a result, WiMAX also provides fixed, nomadic, portable wireless broadband connectivity without the need for direct line-of-sight with a base station.
