  1. COURSE DESCRIPTION:

This course provides the basic framework for the systematic collection, organization, interpretation, and communication of data reflecting the health status of individuals across the life span. This course includes assessment of mental status, basic psychosocial status, basic functional health patterns, and basic physical assessment skills.Incorporated throughout the course is the importance of patient-centered care, quality improvement, ethical-legal considerations, professionalism, and safety. Integration of clinical laboratory provides a setting for practicing and developing critical thinking skills.

To satisfactorily complete this course, the student must achieve a grade of B or above according to the following system:

90– 100=A

80– 89=B

0 – 79=F

  1. COURSE OBJECTIVES:

Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  1. Perform a head to toe physical assessment, including all major body systems.
  2. Document a detailed health assessment with a client across the life span.
  3. Complete a detailed written health and physical assessment of a patient.
  4. Recognize the patient as unique, with individualized needs related to the lifespan and health continuum.
  5. Identify specific needs of patient based on respect for personal preferences, values and cultural factors.
  6. Implement critical thinking and clinical reasoning skills leading to effective clinical judgment.

  1. Demonstrate professionalism, teamwork, and collaboration.
  2. Analyze data collected to monitor outcomes of performance and care processes.
  3. Utilize appropriate safety strategies to minimize risk and maintain privacy and safety of the patient.
  4. Demonstrate caring, compassion, and cultural awareness through effective verbal, nonverbal, and written communication skills.

VIII.COURSE METHODOLOGY:

A variety of teaching methods will be utilized in this course including lecture, discussion, small groups, multimedia materials, and computer technology. Faculty will utilize the Blackboard system when appropriate.

  1. COURSE OUTLINE:

The instructor will incorporate the concepts of safety, patient-centered care, clinical judgment, communication, ethical-legal, and quality improvement while teaching the following topics:

  • Assessing the whole person
  • Approach to the clinical setting
  • Physical exam
  • Integration of health assessment

All textbooks from prior nursing classes may be used as references in either clinical or classroom.

  1. EVALUATION:

Theory is evaluated by written examination and assessment of completeness and accuracy of any additional class related work, including essays, worksheets, quizzes and class participation, as determined by the classroom instructor. Students will be informed of the specific evaluation tools and their respective percentage values on the first day of class.

Use of ATI will be directed per the standardized testing policy.

Instructors reserve the right to modify timing of exams or presentation of units to meet class objectives.
