ISBN FORMATTING
An International Standard Book number (ISBN) is always ten digits in length. The ten digits are always divided into four parts. Each of the four parts has a different function.
a. The first part is a group identifier. (i.e. national, geographical, language or other convenient group). Group identifiers can vary in length from 1 to 5 characters. The length of the first identifier depends on the following ranges of the initial characters within the ISBN.
Length of identifierRange
single digit0-7
two digits80-94
three digits950-991
four digits9920-9989
five digits99900-99999
b. The second part of the ISBN identifies the publisher and is called the "Publisher Prefix". These prefixes have been allocated to publishers according to their current rate of title output and the size of their backlist.
c. The third part identifies the title or particular edition, if there is more than one, and is called the "Title Identifier". The length of the title identifier is determined by the length of the group and publisher identifiers which precede it.
d. The last character within the ISBN is the check digit. It is calculated on a modulus II with weights, 10-2, using X in lieu of 10 where 10 would occur as a check digit.

Notes:
- This field contains the Standard Technical Report Number (STRN) assigned to the technical report. When there is doubt that the number is really a STRN, use Field 087 for Report Number. The STRN is unique identification number for technical reports defined by American National Standards Institute (ANSI) standard number Z39.23-1974. It is composed of three parts:
1) report code: two to fourteen alpha/numeric characters that designate the issuing organization and in some cases a series. The National Technical Information Service is the central authority that coordinates the assignment of unique report codes and maintains a registry of such assignments.
2) sequential group: one to seven numerics assigned in sequence by each report-issuing entity.
3) local suffix: optional field in which the issuing organization may place additional information.
- The report code and sequential group are separated by a hyphen (-), and the sequential group and local suffix are separated by an ampersand (&) or a plus sign (+). Slashes (/) may be used as subdividers within the report code (a maximum of two) and within the sequential group (after the second digit).

- The issue number is the number used to identify the issue designation, or serial identification, assigned by a publisher to a specific sound recording, side of a sound recording, or performance on a sound recording that appears on the label, or to a group of sound recordings that appears on the packaging of those recordings. The matrix number is used to identify the master from which the specific recording was pressed. The matrix number is usually inscribed in the wax disc. The plate number identifies plate numbers assigned by a publisher to a specific music score.
- Subfield b contains the source of the publisher's number. For sound recordings, the label name is recorded in subfield b; for printed music, the publisher's name is recorded.
