NUMBER: 05-01 - 60 Day Pilot Program
SUBJECT: Truck & Rescue Squad Company – Rapid Intervention Crew
I. Purpose
- 60 Day Pilot Program
- Phase I – Training, a 14 day training period will be used to formularize personnel with the responsibilities and operational procedures associated with this SOP.
- Phase II – Implementation, after the initial training period this SOP will be implemented and used for Rapid Intervention Operations. Each time a RIC is established and/or deployed the unit officer must complete a detailed report and submit it to a Chief Officer.
- Phase III - Evaluation – at the completion of the 60 day period the Officers will evaluate the effectiveness of this SOP and submit a recommendation to the Fire Chief.
B. To identify and assign area’s of responsibility and equipment for Rapid Intervention.
II. Responsibilities
The initial responsibility of the primary RIC is to locate and secures the Air Supply of a Firefighter in need of assistance.
III. Operations
A. Tools and Equipment “Tool Cash”

1 maul/sledge hammer
1 saw (type by structure) w/ strap
1 Ladder (size by structure)

1 Radio per 2 person team
B. Procedures
- Make face-to-face contact with Incident Command
- Review the incident action plan
- Identify units operating on the scene
- Identify what progress is being made
- Reconnaissance “Recon”
- Obtain a pre-plan (if there is one)
- Review construction type and layout
- Review extent of fire and fire exposure
- Complete a size up
3. The RIC must shall position themselves in such a manner that allows them a clear and unobstructed view of the emergency scene that is in close proximity yet it does not hinder emergency operations.
4. Action Plan
Develop an Action/Rescue Plan based on all current known factors.
5. Deployment
a. The RIC will deploy only at the request of the Incident Commander.
b. When a Mayday occurs, the IC and the RIC Officer should attempt to collect the following information from of about the downed firefighter(s) using the acronym “LUNAR”

U nit (identification of the crew and assignment)
N ame (of firefighter(s) in need of assistance)
A ssignment (last known assignment given to the crew)
R esources (equipment needed to effect the Rescue Plan)
