Criteria

  • All primary school pupils who are currently playing competitive hockey or who display a strong interest and aptitude for the sport may apply. Pupils must display athletic ability, good reflex and hand/eye coordination skills.
  • Pupils must possess diligence & positive attitude in academic work.
  • Considerations will be taken on a pupil's relevant accomplishments and representation in sports or any other activity.
  • Recommendations of the teacher-in-charge of hockey at the primary school/ other references will be taken for Evaluation Only.

Selection Process

DSA Schedule

All interested pupils are required to attend the DSA Selection at Northland Secondary School on 11 July 2015, Saturday at 8.30am at Northland Secondary School’s Hockey Pitch.

Pupils are to download and bring with them the duly completed NSS DSA Application form for submission during the selection trials.

Pupils unable to attend the official trial can make special arrangements for trials to be conducted at other times. Such arrangements must be made before15 August 2015, Saturdayas assessments and DSA application forms should be submitted to Northland Secondary School by 21 August 2015, Friday. Northland Secondary Hockey Assessors will be sent down to observe pupil abilities during school training or competition.

All NSS DSA application forms must be submitted to Northland Secondary School by 21 August 2015, Friday. Pupils who have not been assessed during this selection exercise will not be considered.

  1. What type of pupils are we looking for?

We are looking for pupils who are currently playing competitive hockey or who display a strong interest and aptitude for the sport. Your child need not be a hockey player but must possess athletic ability, good reflexes and hand/eye coordination skills for the sport. He/She must also possess diligence & a positive attitude in academic work.

Consideration will be taken on a pupil’s relevant accomplishments and representation in sports or any other activity. Recommendations of the teacher-in-charge of hockey at the primary school/ other references will be considered.

  1. Is there a minimum requirement?

All pupils who can demonstrate the criteria listed in paragraphs 1 and 2 will be eligible.

  1. Will there be trials conducted by the school?

All interested pupils are required to attend the Northland Hockey and Floorball Party cum DSA selection at Northland Secondary School on 11July 2015, Saturday at 8.30am at Northland Secondary School’s Hockey Pitch.

  1. If my child is unable to attend the trials, can I make alternative arrangements?

Pupils who are unable to attend the Northland Hockey Party cum DSA selection on 11July 2015, Saturday at 8.30am because of any valid reasons can make alternative arrangements with Northland Secondary School before 15 August 2015, Saturday.All assessments must be completed by 21 August 2015, Friday. Northland Secondary Hockey Assessors will be sent down to observe pupil abilities during school training or competition.   1. How will we select pupils?

A panel comprising the Principal,Vice-Principal, HOD/CCA, Sports
Secretary and teachers-in-charge of Hockey will make a final selection
based on a pupil’s performance at the trial and/or competitions together
with recommendations from the primary school. Pupils will then be
emplaced in a confirmed list, waiting list and rejected list and will be duly
notified.

  1. When is the closing date for submitting the DSA application form?

All pupil DSA applications should be submitted to our school by
Friday, 21 August 2015.

  1. How will my child be notified as to whether he/she has been successful?

Your child will be formally notified through his/her Primary School or via post to his or her official address after31August 2015, Monday as to whether he/she
is on the confirmed, waiting or rejected list.

  1. What is Northland Secondary School’s vision for hockey in future?

Northland Secondary School intends to be the centre of excellence for
hockey among schools in Singapore where Northlanders can move on to
represent Singapore in the international hockey arena.

  1. What sets Northland Secondary School apart from other schools offering hockey as a sport?

Our comprehensive training programme manned by a team of highly
qualified coaches and teachers, and sterling achievements in national
hockey competitions since 1996 has established Northland Secondary
School as a powerhouse in Hockey in both the Girls' and Boys' Division.

  1. What value-addedness will Northland Secondary provide my child?

In line with the school’s vision, our long term strategy leverages the
hockey sport towards enhancing the mental, social and moral
development of our pupils while imparting in them positive life-skills that
equips them to become successful and socially responsible individuals. In
addition to the school’s hockey programme, the plethora of co-curricular
enrichment programmes exposes pupils to experiences that provide them
opportunities to learn new skills, tackle difficulties and challenges in the
evolving economy. Such programmes include the Youth Leadership
Development Programme, IT Enrichment Programme, Arts Education
Programme, Life Science Enrichment Programme and Inter-disciplinary
Project Work.

  1. How heavily involved will my child be in this CCA and what academic
    assistance will you provide my child?

Hockey training practice occurs three times a week at the School’s Hockey turf. The school has an academic monitoring system in place
to identify pupils that require remediation and academic guidance.

  1. Will my child have to purchase his or her own hockey equipment?

The school provides for basic hockey equipment such as hockey sticks,
protective gear and jersey sets.

  1. If my child does not progress up to expectation, what will the school do?

Your child will still remain in the team and will be provided opportunities to represent the school at levels your child is comfortable with.

I understand that once my child/ward is successfully allocated to Northland Secondary School, he/she will not be allowed to participate in the Secondary One Posting Exercise to opt for secondary schools, and will not be allowed to transfer to another school after the release of the PSLE results.
