WHO: Singles, pairs or trios of students; decide your own groups, so choose WISELY!

WHAT: Draw a net view of a cereal box, cover it, then use it to list important math information

WHERE: In math class ONLY; you are not to work on this outside of class

WHEN: Monday, May 9-Thursday, May 12

WHY: To review the key concepts of Geometry and Measurement!

HOW:

·  Part 1: Net

o  You need ONE cereal box from home.

o  Draw the NET of your box (imagine you unfold the box so that it lays flat).

o  The net should be drawn to the actual size of the cereal box; you may need to tape more than 1 sheet of graph paper together.

o  Measure and label each side of your net view.

·  Part 2: Construction Paper

o  Use your net to find the area of each face of your cereal box.

o  Find the combined surface area of your cereal box.

o  Show all your work and list the area/surface area on your net.

o  Get as close to the actual amount of construction paper needed according to your individual areas and surface area; pay attention to the areas of each individual piece of construction paper.

o  Cut out the construction paper according to your net.

·  Part 3: Math Notes

o  You have 6 faces on your cereral box; include information on them as indicated.

§  Top: Your name(s), date, and block

§  Bottom: List your favorite part of math class this school year.

§  Front: List directions on how to find surface area; include an example.

§  Back: List directions on how to find volume; include an example.

§  Side 1: Define at least 3 key vocabulary words related to surface area and/or volume

§  Side 2: Describe 2 situations—one that would require the use of surface area and one that would require the use of volume

·  Part 4: Cover

o  Once you have all the necessary information icluded on each part of the construciton paper, cover your cereal box.

o  You may use glue or tape to cover your box.

·  Part 5 (BONUS): Volume

o  Find the volume of your ceral box.

o  Show ALL YOUR WORK for volume.

o  Compare your volume and surface area.

·  Grading: See the other side for your grading rubrics!
