PSUK Judo

November Training weekend and matches v Team Bath and Budokwai

Police Sport UK Judo held another successful weekend at NPIA Bramshill, Hampshire between the 16th and 18th November 2007.

Bramshill is a new venue for PSUK Judo, and the staff there made every effort to ensure that all delegates were most comfortable and afforded the highest levels of facilities. It is hoped that the venue can be used for future training weekends. There were 93 delegates in total with 54 of those being accommodated in the lovely refurbished en suite facilities.

Friday evening saw the traditional hour and a half of randori, mostly attended by the residential delegates; this was followed by a buffet and drinks in the Green Ride bar.

On Saturday PSUK were able to attract Andrew Moshinov British Judo Association Technical Director as the guest coach for the weekend. Andrew has the highest credentials as a coach and delivered a number of new and exciting inputs ranging from a variety of newaza escape techniques to combination attacks for more advanced players. The feedback on his training input was extremely positive and our thanks go to Andrew for taking the time to pass on his knowledge and experience.

Following Andrew’s session was a very exciting three way team match between GB Police, BathUniversity and the Budokwai. These were three very different teams, the police fielding a slightly depleted team with only one member of the team that fought in Moscow recently. The university team was packed with young exciting talent which will represent the future of judo in the country and the Budokwai fielded a very experienced team packed with current and former international players.

Bath took on the Budokwai in the first match; winners shown in bold (some players having two fights)

The contests were fought in a great spirit and the police physio was kept busy as there were a couple of minor injuries. It was refreshing to see some high levels of skillful and technical judo in a team match. PSUK are grateful to both Team Bath and the Budokwai for continuing their close association with Police judo, it is hoped this will continue long into the future. Thanks to Norito Katabuchi and Yuko Nakano from BathUniversity and Tony Sweeney from the Budokwai.

As well as being a revalidation for BJA coaches, the weekend also provided an opportunity for players to take part in a promotion examination. With several Senior examiners present it possible to grade up to 5thDan. Present on the mat were two 9th Dans Mr Tony Sweeney and Mr Alan Petherbridge MBE who are strong supporters of police judo, both Tony and Alan are Honorary Police National Coaches with a very impressive competition history having represented Great Britain in the 1964 Olympic Games where Alan had been the team captain, PSUK Judo were able to have three 6th Dans Chris Hunt, Ian Carter and Matthew Clempner, also on the mat, a credit to police judo that so many high grades were present.

PSUK also provide a sports masseuse, Jan Lawry who was kept busy for almost all of Saturday as delegates took advantage of her skills, it hoped Jan will attend future PSUK judo events. This will provide support for our physiotherapist Lloyd Nicholson.

The next PSUK judo weekend will be in either late march or early April 2008, a venue and date has not yet been agreed.
