AP COURSE AND GRADE PHILOSOPHY

ADVANCED PLACEMENT CLASSES (AP)

These courses are offered under the College Board Advanced Placement program. Students receive high school credit for the course. All students enrolled in these classes are required to take the AP test (exam fees are waived if needed). Successful completion of this course (a “C” or higher), along with taking the AP test, provides a “grade point” adjustment for each student. Depending on their score, students could obtain college units for the class. Student must complete and sign a contract, along with a parent signature, and submit this form to the teacher of record.

Advanced Placementcourses are designed to prepare students for the Advanced Placement Examination of the American College Board. Successful completion of the course and passing the exam with a satisfactory score may give the student credit for the equivalent freshman level college course. If an A.P. course is not offered at Novato High School, students may still take the exam for that subject. To receive the additional grade point adjustment from Novato High School, students must be enrolled in the AP course and take the Advanced Placement exam for that subject.

  • Students/ parents/guardians must sign a commitment for each course in which they enroll that will include an understanding of AP course expectations.
  • The signed AP course “statement of understanding” commits students to a year- long enrollment in the course.
  • All AP courses are “open access” for all Novato High School students who wish to challenge themselves.

Cheating

Generally, studentsareconsideredto be cheatingif they misrepresenttheir knowledge or skill inordertoimprove a grade. Usingcheat sheets, copyingfromanother student's work, and plagiarizingsomeone else's words or ideasare threecommon examples of cheating. Astudent who allows another studentto copyhis orher workisalso consideredto becheating.

Plagiarism

The wordplagiarismderives fromthe Latin, plagium, meaningkidnapping. One who plagiarizes stealsthe wordsor ideascreated byanother. Here aresome examplesof plagiarism:

 Takinga factoridea fromanother source but presenting

it in your own words without identifyingthe source.

 Usingsome wordingfroma source,identifyingthesource,

butnot usingquotation marks to identifythe exactwords of

 Copyingone or more sentencesfroma source

Consequences

FirstOffense:

1. Studentreceives nocredit for assignment

2. Teachercompletes anddistributes three copies ofthe letter,

Parent/Guardian(byMail) Counselor Assistant Principal

SecondOffense:

1. Since AP and Honorscourses are more rigorous,if the

student’s offense occurred inan AP orHonors course and

a regular courseexists inthediscipline, the student will

beremoved fromthe AP or Honors course and placed in

a regular college prep course.

2. Reducecoursegrade byone lettergradein class where
