BINH DINH ANCIENT CERAMICS - VIJAYA KINGDOM

AND ITS RELATIONSHIP WITH THANG LONG CITADEL - DAI VIET (11th - 15th CENTURIES)

In Quy Nhon city, Binh Dinh Province (Central Vietnam)

(Tentative date: From 26th to 28th October 2017)

CONFERENCE ANNOUNCEMENT

Vijaya was a famous kingdom in Champa history in central Vietnam, emerged and developed during 5 centuries, from the tenth to the fifteenth centuries. During that period, Champa kings ordered to build many citadels, palaces and temples of those many historical traces are still exist in and around Quy Nhon city of Binh Dinh province nowadays.

This area is also home to 6 famous ceramics production centers including Go Sanh, Truong Cuu, Go Cay Me, Go Giang, Go Ke and Go Hoi. These centers were discovered in the early 70s of the twentieth century and then officially excavated 16 years later. The results of the excavations of Go Sanh (1990 - 1994), Go Hoi (2004) and Truong Cuu (2014) have confirmed that ceramic centers in Binh Dinh were produced mostly from the 14th to late the 15th century. The owner of these ceramic centers, however, is still a debatable issue.

It’s important to note that by the 15th century, Binh Dinh kilns had developed dramatically, produced many high quality ceramics, not only to meet the demand of domestic market, but also to export to many other countries in South East Asia, especially to the Philippines and Indonesia.

At Thang Long Imperial Citadel site (Hanoi City), numerous of Binh Dinh ceramics were found, date to the 15th century. This is the vivid evidence reflecting the economic and cultural exchange between Champa Kingdom and Thang Long citadel - Dai Viet during the Le dynasty.

In order to shed more light on Binh Dinh ancient ceramics and its role in the history of economic and cultural exchange between Champa and Dai Viet as well as other countries in South East Asia, the Research Center for Imperial Citadel (RCIC) - Vietnam Academy of Social Sciences (VASS), in co-operating with Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism - People Committee of Binh Dinh Province, are intending to organize the International Conference Binh Dinh ancient ceramics - Vijaya Kingdom and its relationship with Thang Long citadel - Dai Viet (11th-15th centuries) in Quy Nhon City, Binh Dinh province in late October 2017.
