Purbeck Runners
Annual Report (2013) Summary of Committee Reports
Chair’s Report –Hamish MurrayThe Club continues to flourish and play a major part in the local and Dorset-wide running scene. With its large and enthusiastic membership, the Club is also an important part of the Purbeck community, supporting many local events and charities.
There have been some changes in the composition of the committee in the last 12 months: We welcomed Alania Lawton and Sam Watt onto the committee in March and they have done an excellent job in representing the Club’s Junior Section.
Jayne Hodson stood down from the Committee due to family and new job commitments. Jayne, who has been Club’s Treasurer since its inception, has made a great contribution to the success of the Club and we thank her for all her hard work. Chris Troke is the new Treasurer and I’m sure he will perform the role with distinction.
I would also like to thank the other members of the Committee: The social side of the Club continues to thrive in so many ways thanks to hard work of Tara and Tish. Dave Pratten has done a great job in developing the juniors and providing his coaching expertise to the wider membership. Zodwa continues to take care of the membership side and so much more, while Ross’s massive contribution includes probably Britain’s best and most up to date running club website.
The past year has been a great success on many fronts with so many members playing an active part in the Club. The Club Championships have been particularly exciting with a strong showing from some new faces and there have been some great results in the Dorset Road Running League. Away from Dorset, members have also represented the Club with great distinction in a wide range of races and events. So, finally, a big thank you to all our members who make Purbeck Runners such a special club.

Youth and Coaching Co-ordinator -Dave Pratten
This has been a very successful year for the Junior Section in terms of participation, achievement, enjoyment and development. Juniors join the sessions for a number of different reasons including; developing general fitness, improving running performance, improving running as part of other sports (e.g. triathlon, duathlon, rugby and football), as part of DoE awards and most importantly fun.
The Wednesday evening sections regularly attract a dozen or so members who participate enthusiastically in sessions, which may include steady looped runs, hill sessions, intervals, relays and on occasion barefoot running on the sand. All sessions start with a briefing, emphasise safety and good practice e.g. wearing of reflective clothing, warm up, warm down and stretching. Leaders have received safeguarding training and are CRB cleared. The common element to all our activities is fun!
Individual junior members have recorded notable sporting performances; Sam Brown has won cross country, triathlons and duathlons. Lola Brown won the 800m race at the pool end east Dorset District Championships and was also winner of the Sika mountain bike duathlon. Lily Burnet has competed in triathlons at home and as far away as Australia and abroad winning the recent Purbeck triathlon. Emily Bridger produced one of the outstanding performances of the year in the Studland 5k and Sam Watts joined Sam Brown in making a debut 10k appearance in the Purbeck 10k. Alania Lawton has made the greatest number of appearances at club sessions.
An important development this year has been the attendance and contribution of two members Sam Watts and Alania at Club Committee meetings. This ensures the views of the Juniors are heard and acted upon where possible.
In terms of future development it is intended to introduce a separate Junior Club Championship next year, organise a local junior event, and provide running opportunities in different venues ad increase the number of suitably qualified leaders.
The junior sessions would not be possible without the adult helpers who give generously of their time. On behalf of the members I would like to thank Coops, Tracey C, Jonathan and Dean for their regular support and any others who have assisted over the year. Of all the helpers one deserves a special mention; Sam Watts assists with almost every session and does so with infectious enthusiasm which ‘rubs off’ on everyone else. He is a great ambassador for Purbeck Runners and deserves all of our thanks.
Social Secretaries –Tish Alberry & Tara McLintic
As social secretaries, Tara and Tish are responsible for organising non running social events for the club. Their aim is to include one or more events that involve our junior members.
Over the past year we have had another successful and well attended quiz night. This has proved to be popular and will remain as an annual event.
In July, we enjoyed a very lively BBQ and Rounders evening. This was a great opportunity for our junior members to join in and it is hoped that this will also become an annual event.
In November an enthusiastic group spent a very enjoyable evening at the dog racing in Poole and a good time was had by all.
During the year we have had several ‘steak nights’ at The Red Lion which have also been very well attended. T and T would like to thank the members who organised these evenings. They have been great fun.
The ‘Out and Abouts’ are now under the ‘social’ umbrella and we have travelled to the far corners of Purbeck almost every month this year.
The next big event is, of course, The Christmas Do. We hope that the new venue and format will be successful.
Tara and Tish welcome any suggestions regarding Out and About runs and social events, particularly ideas that include our junior members.
