Sensory awareness . Tracks & trails.

KS 1

Unnatural trail :- Toys / items hidden along a rope or hedge. Children in a circle hands behind back , describe what they saw, position numbers / colours on the rope.

Bear Hunt . Hide bears and use sticks made into arrows to indicate trial & direction of hidden bears . Get others to try out your trail.

Count steps . say directions – low /high.

Point direction , describe ground .

Children to draw symbolic map of their journey.

Draw a sound map of environment . x in the centre of page denotes themselves pictures of sounds – symbolic or iconic.

Language:- near above under next to behind far away from half way up left right .

Model description of objects , bigger than , smaller than , colour , shape, materials ; made of wood etc.

Find something beginning with a given letter, a certain colour.

I went on a sensory trail and I found.

Blind trail . children in pairs , one blind folded , the other takes them on a journey supporting them at the elbow. Sight child to describe what they can see.

Birds eye view

Outside make a layout / plan of school using cardboard boxes/ construction material ,look down on it & draw what they can see.

Flower pot orienteering

Flower pots with alphabet on –draw map then hide pots.

Map of school send off groups to find letters to make an anagram.

Map of classroom – find animals.

Wooden plaques with different reliefs on them , children take rubbings.

Close up photographs of objects outside eg part of a manhole cover. Children find objects on the map.

Sketch buildings write questions to ask the building attempt to answer them .Write a poem Eg.

How long it take to build you ?

Where did all the people live who are buried in the church yard?

When did you first see a car use the road?

Do you feel old ? Have you ever been mistreated?
