#NOTAFAVOUR campaign- challenging the acceptability of supply of tobacco to young people by adults
In the decade or so since Scotland’s indoor public spaces became smoke-free, many fewer people are smoking, children don’t have to be exposed to smoke in cinemas, cafes, restaurants and shopping malls. Cigarettes are no longer sold in plain view of the sweet counter and most adults avoid smoking around children. Scotland is on her way to creating a whole generation free from the harm caused by tobacco.
Anytown High School’sfocus on health promotion, health protection and healthy role modelling behaviour is designed to ensure that our pupils continue toappreciate smoke-free environments as both an expectation and a right.
In nurturing and supporting young people to make healthy choices as they make the transition into adulthood, Anytown High Schoolhas an equally important role in encouraging adults in our local community to recognise that their actions play a keypart in ensuring that young people grow up free from tobacco.
Whilst we know that proxy purchase, when an adult buys cigarettes on behalf of someone under-18, is illegal, we also know that some young people are still able to get cigarettes from family members, friends, or strangers.
This is why Anytown High School has chosen to support ASH Scotland’s #NOTAFAVOUR campaign. The campaign focuses on the role that adults play in supplying young people with tobacco. The campaign message asks a straightforward question: is providing young people with tobacco doing them a favour?
In supporting the #NOTAFAVOURcampaign, Anytown High School will be(add or delete or add as appropriate):
- using the school Twitter feed to highlight our support for the #NOTAFAVOUR campaign
- designing posters and banners that will display our support for the #NOTAFAVOUR campaign in the local community
- approaching local tobacco retailers to look at ways in which we can keep tobacco out of Anytown High School
- work with our community partners (trading standards, community youth work groups etc) in order to highlight the importance of challenging the acceptability of supply of tobacco to young people by adults.
So, our request to carers, parents, brothers, sisters, grandparents and family friends inAnytownis a simple one. We’re asking you to ask yourself;is providing young people in the Anytown community with tobacco doing them a favour?
Absolutely not!
