Not Somewhere Else, But Here: Steps to Developing Multicultural Competency

Mary R. Ferguson, Ph.D. currently serves as the Racial Justice Consultant for the YWCA of Metro St. Louis. Her background includes teaching and administrative positions at a number of private and public institutions. Most recently Mary was Diversity and Inclusion Leader at Washington University Medical School in St. Louis, after serving as Indiana State University’s Diversity Officer from 2009-2011. She has also been on faculty at Webster University and University of Missouri-St. Louis. Mary came to higher education after spending years in preK-12 education, adult and community education, arts education, and English Language learning.

Mary brings extensive knowledge of the non-profit and human services world to her work as well. She has held positions with Big Brothers Big Sisters of America and the American Youth Foundation. In St. Louis, Mary has been associated with every major community-based equity organization including the National Conference for Community and Justice, the Anti-Defamation League, FOCUS St. Louis, and the Diversity Awareness Partnership. She provided training to the Ferguson Commission and remains connected to the work of Forward Through Ferguson.

Mary is a St. Louis native with a commitment to lifelong learning, engaged citizenship, and equity and social justice. She earned a doctorate in education with an emphasis in social justice from the University of Missouri-St. Louis. Along with a colleague at UM-St. Louis, Mary co-hosted the 7th Annual White Privilege Conference – Youth: A Call to Action in 2006. She is a proud mother and mentor to many in the social justice arena.

Not Somewhere Else, But Here: Steps to Developing Multicultural Competency

Poet Adrienne Rich reminds us that our approach to “somewhere else” is only part of our intercultural relationships. Rich’s lines suggest a deep dive into what we bring to cross-cultural encounters (“here”) as our starting point; we are in the center of our practice. The multiple social identities and roles we occupy deserve examination as we aspire to fluency in multiple cultural contexts. Then the dispositions, knowledge, and skills necessary for multicultural competency – what the literature identifies as an “intercultural mindset” - can be acquired and practiced.

Participants in this session will be able to:

  • Probe their consequential mental frameworks and paradigms on cultural differences
  • Deconstruct early scripting, pervasive imagery, and unconscious biases that impact them
  • Identify behaviors that limit their effectiveness across cultures
  • Understand alternative behaviors to adopt

We will engage in shared learning, activities, reflection, and discussion during the three-hour session.

The Evolution of Ethics: Practicing Ethical Social Work in the Technological Era

Katie VonDeLinde, MSW, LCSW is an energetic and passionate social worker who teaches, advocates, writes and thinks on issues of social work ethics, gender, economic, and racial justice, intimate partner violence, and holistic, empowering social work. Ms. VonDeLinde has advocated for the rights of domestic violence survivors for over twenty years including as Assistant Director of a DV program in rural Iowa and as program director for an urban economic advocacy intimate partner violence program providing nationwide trainings to thousands of social workers and advocates on the intersection of economics and violence against women. Ms. VonDeLinde is an award winning adjunct faculty member at the Brown School of Social Work, Washington University, co-directs KMCV consulting, LLC, and serves as an expert advisor to the Center for Survivor Agency and Justice.

Workshop Description: Social Workers are increasingly using technology for service provision, communication, and publicity. At the same time, clients are actively engaging in social media platforms and resource acquisition through technology.Technology provides amazing advances in access for our clients, yet also creates new ethical challenges and concerns. This workshop will: explore the evolution of the NASW code of ethics and increase your understanding of the 2018 revisions. We will also analyze the 2017 Standards for Technology in Social Work Practice.Through interactive activities, we will apply the code of ethics revisions and practice standards to real world scenarios. The class will help you maximize the positive aspects of technology, while maintaining safety for your clients, your organization, and yourself.

Objectives:

  1. To increase understanding of the evolution of the NASW code of ethics.
  2. To increase knowledge of the 2018 changes to the NASW code of ethics especially changes related to technology
  3. To increase knowledge of the 2017 Standards forTechnology in Social Work Practice
  4. To strengthen ability to apply 2018 NASW code of ethics to current social work practice.
  5. To increase critical thinking skills when confronting technological ethical dilemmas.
  6. Increase social work knowledge of resources to support ethical decision making.
