Not exactly proud to use the exception for flow control I needed to escape to this highly criticized approach when I was given an assignment to get control of the TEXT contained MS Word document with tables that contained merged rows.
My output is to HTML.
MS Word can produce an output to HTML with the tables with any combination of merged rows or columns.
That is, obtaining output to HTML alone is NOT the task I tackled. The point was to perform a number of operations on the text. Merging and splitting cells in MS Word is easy. The problem is how to access the content in the table that contains rows and columns merged earlier by someone else. The VBS script that accompanies this document shows one of possible approaches to access text in any cell. For a particular instance I needed to handle (quoted below).
Putting the processed content back to MS Word can be as simple as opening HTML file with MS Word and saving it in any of supported formats.
-The below sample works for a table(s) with nominally four(4) columns. You need to modify code to handle different or variable number of columns.
-Additional filtering is applied to process only the tables that contain certain string in the first column. The other tables are ignored.
-The first column is assumed not to be merged. Modify your code accordingly if some other column is merger free.
