ACC West Coast Saves the Day (5 Days)

OAKLAND -- Not all heroes ride in on a white horse... some arrive in a yellow CAT, which is precisely how American Civil Constructors (ACC) showed up to free the I-880 connector from the collapsed bridge that made it impassible.

Early April 29th a tanker fire destroyed the I-580 overpass, which is the center of the Bay Area's freeway network called the MacArthur Maze. The collapse of I-580 sent a blanket of destroyed roadway over the connector between southbound I-80 to I-880 compounding the traffic nightmare. Fortunately, ACC's West Coast team was completing a seismic retrofit on a nearby stretch of I-880 and was able to step in for emergency clean up and repairs.

ACC immediately moved in on April 29 to provide traffic control for both I-880 and I-580. Crews then worked to provide temporary shoring of I-880, stabilize the open sections of the 580, and perform demolition and repair of the guardrails and deck on the I-880. CalTrans projected an 11-day closure to the I-880 but thanks to the 24-7 work of 75 ACC employees and subcontractors the road reopened to morning commuters at five a.m. on May 7 - a relief to the 35,000 commuters who use the I-880 connector daily.

ACC commends Dave Horn and his team, made up of project manager, Doug Silverwood, Superintendents Todd Gross, Richard Ronquillo, Dave Wilkerson and Bill Holt and many talented people in the field for a job well done.
