Printmaking/Gyotaku Fish Prints

Objectives:
·  create multiple prints of a rubber fish
·  understand the history behind Gyotaku fish printing
·  understand the printmaking process
·  design a print to be added to part of the class’s school of fish
·  recognize expressive art work
Procedures/Activities:
Day 1:
·  Define with students printmaking, printing, and prints. Introduce history of Gyotaku fish printing as Japanese art form from the mid-19th century. Show examples of Gyotaku fish prints.
·  Demonstrate how the students are going to print two different fish. One of their prints will be put together to make a school of fish for their class.
·  SWBAT make three prints today. Put on drying rack to dry.
Day 2:
·  Finish printing any fish today.
·  Cut out dry successful fish and place together with class’s fish on large piece of paper. SW take time to decorate around their fish on the paper they are all attached to.
·  Incorporate the homeroom number into the fish display.
·  Hang outside of homeroom if possible, or around school for Open House.
Day 3:
·  Complete pattern portfolio assignment using remaining fish prints.
·  Trace around chosen print. Glue it to paper. Use thin sharpies to create intricate design in and around traced fish.
Materials:
·  rubber fish
·  tempera paint
·  brushes
·  paper plates
·  manila paper
·  printing paper / Vocabulary:
·  Gyotaku print
·  Printmaking
·  Print
·  burnishing
Assessment:
·  Two successful prints, one to be used as class ‘school’ of fish. / Adaptations:
·  Use stamps in the shape of fish instead with ink pads.
