A big round of “Thanks” to Mike Canik. Mike prepared and served lunch for visitors to the Quilting show held the end of July. He raised $600 for NHS. His helpers included Ruth Meyer, Ruth Grier and Steve.

Coming up the end of August is the Cause Fore Paws event. This event is in its 20th year and for the past ten years it has been sponsored and fun by Dave and Sue Reichert of Camp David Realty and Dennis and Kathy Howard, owners of Garmisch Inn. This has become our largest fundraiser of the year. Everyone is invited to the cocktail party on Saturday at Garmisch Inn. The event begins at 4 p.m. Tickets are $10 a person. There is a silent and large auction and of course the beautiful surroundings of Garmisch Inn. Golf takes place on Sunday, August 28 at Telemark Golf Course followed by dinner and awards at Garmisch Inn. For more information or to register call Garmisch Inn or Camp David Realty.

The last major hoorah for the fund raising season will be the Craig Allen Motorcycle Ride, Convertible and Classic Car Cruise and Run beginning at Camp Namekagon in Springbrook followed by the live Music of Been There Don That from 3:30 to 5:30 and Dakota Crossing from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. For more information call Alecia Austin at the shelter at 715-634-5394 or e- mail at .

Thank you to those that donated great items to the NHS Thrift Shop. Our pricing crew Linnea Forsell, Carol Winesburg, Carol Kemp, Joyce Palucci, Sharon Goodacre, Shirley Girard, Frank and Myrna Cowan for getting everything ready for the floor. We welcome new volunteers Paula Novy and Barbara Hoeft to the sales crew! It has been a good summer at the shop.

All this fundraising, so many volunteers, so many talents shared – why? Because of the animals in need of care at the Northwoods Humane Society Shelter. Lisa Lew and her crew are caring for over 68 cats and kittens at the moment. The dog population has filled the kennels and the intake kennels. We have recently taken14 dogs that arrived from Texas – all scheduled to be euthanized. They are healthy. The six puppies are about 9 weeks old and very busy and there are 6 Catahoula dogs that are 6 months old and really need a lot of TLC and socialization. They are all gentle souls. We have an assortment of sizes and shapes that have come from surrenders and our area pounds – really something for everyone. One that pulls at my heart strings is a little terroir mix that was brought in as a stray with wounds on his body. The vet thinks he may have been bitten by a bear by the nature of the wounds – we will never know for sure. He will be in foster care with a retired nurse – which is perfect as he needs to have his wounds cleaned several times a day.

Life is busy at the NHS Shelter, the NHS Thrift Shop and at all the events – but is really good, constructive busy – thank you to all for the great work and support.
