Program:
Wednesday, Nov. 18th, 7:30 p.m.
McLean Community Center
Competition: Guest judge: Wayne Wolfersberger
Note: Originally scheduled for Nov. 11th, but the Community Center was closed on the 11th for Veterans Day.
An ecologist-naturalist and educator by professional training and a nature photographer by passion, Wayne has integrated both areas to become a well respected nature photographer in the area. His photographic expertise was honed while working for a D.C. area commercial photography firm, the US Navy and involvement in numerous seminars and workshops. Wayne is a member of NANPA (North American Nature Photography Association), the Vienna Photographic Society and Northern VA Photographic Association for which he serve as VP and President. Wayne has delivered numerous and varied photographic programs to many local groups and also in the UK and Australia. Many of his images have appeared in national magazines (including three images in Nature’s Best), on calendars, postcards, and exhibited as fine art prints. During the spring and fall Wayne teaches a variety of photography classes for Fairfax Co Adult & Community Education but during the summer you will find Wayne in Yellowstone working for the US National Park Service.
/ President’s Message:
Last month was our first experiment with a meeting completely dedicated to critiquing photos that members brought in, prints and digital. Everyone was able to leave with some excellent suggestions.
We also voted to approve the purchase of an inexpensive laptop to facilitate our increasing use of projecting our digital photos for critiques, presentations, and eventually competitions. There’s no need to rush into the purchase of the laptop; we can see if the pace continues to increase in showing our photos with borrowed laptops. And we still have the issue of getting the right colors from the digital projector. We saw an interesting aspect of this in the critique meeting – though a few photos lost detail in dark areas of the images, most photos actually projected with deeper saturation than was viewed on the laptop.
Competition changes:
There was a lot of discussion during our June business/get-together meeting about competition rule changes, and the results of the discussions haven’t been in the newsletter until now. We put some of the proposed changes to votes in the September meeting.
It was decided not to have a separate category for enhanced images (mainly being extra changes to photos not really possible in a traditional darkroom).
We clarified the rule on re-entering images – An image that has taken honors (1st, 2nd, 3rd, or Honorable Mention) may not be entered again in competition. And regarding moving up to Advanced Class – within a given category, members are automatically promoted to Advanced if during any previous club year, they placed 1st, 2nd, 3rd, or HM on three or more occasions (the Competitions chair will notify those moving up at the end of the club year).
Finally, there was sentiment for reducing the number of entries to two per category. Sometimes there are so many entries, people need to leave before we’re done. In case there aren’t so many Nov. 11, bring a third, but the limit will probably be two per category. The B&W category is a great way to get a couple more photos in.
Dues have been due since September. Entries for Competitions must be paid up on dues. $25 for the year.

Bill Folsom workshops at Meadowlark

Goto http://www.wfolsom.com/LESSONS/classes.html to see Bill Folsom classes dealing with the key elements of photography. Introductory classes are offered aimed at beginners; those classes provide a very gentle overview of all aspects of photography in a 1 to 2 hour lecture. Intermediate classes help beginners to understand the basics of photography (lighting, equipment, composition) and are also helpful to those who wish to become better photographers. Some of the advanced classes can also be taken by beginners once they have some experience in photography. Advanced techniques, such as understanding aperture, shutter speed, and exposure are useful for those who wish to advance beyond the "point-and-shoot" style of photography. If the weather cooperates, classes frequently head outside to photograph in the Gardens for an hour or so after each class.
