Program Philosophy & Vision for York Suburban Swimming: ‘A Culture of Excellence’

You can’t know where you are going unless you know where you have been. York Suburban Swimming began in the late 1950’s and has built into a pillar for Academic and Competitive Swimming excellence ever since. While it has created Individual & Team Accolades over the years, the Biggest ‘Tradition’ of York Suburban Swimming is preparing its Swimmers for the next chapters of his/her life. Whether that’s College, Military, Workforce, etc, York Suburban Swimming Shapes Young Minds to better prepare for his/her roles as an Adult.

Being a York Suburban Swimmer means:

  • Continuing the Tradition of Excellence in the Classroom and in the Pool
  • Being a Role Model for Teamwork, Sportsmanship & Character
  • Setting Team & Individual Goals that are challenging yet rewarding to Achieve
  • Doing what others believe cannot be done
  • Accepting the Awesome Responsibility to be the BEST!

Competitive Varsity Swimming is not an easy Sport. It requires Dedication, Commitment and Resilience during the entirety of the season to find Success. Trying to take on Swimming alone is helpful as a trap door in a life boat. Luckily, there are Teammates, Coaches, Parents, Brothers, Sisters, Aunts, Uncles, Grandparents & Friends who are there to help…turning what might turn what appears on the surface to be a brutal sport into something Fun and Exciting. No swimmer is alone in the sport/on the TEAM!

Each Swimmer (regardless of ability) is equal part Owner of the Team. Which means…

  • Each swimmer shares in the Success of the Team
  • Each swimmer shares in the Failure of the Team
  • Being Successful requires TEAM EFFORT

Each Swimmer must learn Proper Time Management Skills to be Successful in Both Classroom & Pool. While Coaches can control the amount of training each swimmer does, it is the Responsibility of the Swimmer to pay attention to Nutrition & Sleep Habits. Poor Nutrition or Poor Sleep Habits will lead to Less Energy & Worse Performance in the Classroom & Pool.

YORK SUBURBAN SCHOOL DISTRICT

CONTRACT FOR PARTICIPATION IN CO-CURRICULAR AND EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES

Philosophy

Participation in co-curricular and extracurricular activities is a privilege. Students who choose to participate in a co-curricular or extracurricular activity are accepting the privileges and benefits of participating in a school-sponsored activity as well as the responsibility and commitment to that organization. There is a high standard of behavioral expectations both in school and in the community. Students who wish to represent York Suburban School District in co-curricular and extracurricular activities must meet this standard in order to participate.

The use of controlled substances seriously threatens the health, safety, and welfare of adolescents and it fails to uphold the standards of behavior set forth by the district. Because of the harmful effects of such substances and the poor reflection on the organization(s) represented by the student, it is incumbent upon the school to respond to any confirmed possession or use. Students who possess or engage in the use of controlled substances will lose the privilege of participating in co-curricular and extracurricular activities for a designated period of time.

The intent of this policy is to provide for the students a clear standard of expectations as well as to provide students with a significant reason to avoid these harmful behaviors.

Definitions

Controlled substance – All controlled substances prohibited by federal and state law, look-alike drugs, alcoholic beverages, anabolic steroids, drug paraphernalia, any volatile solvents or inhalants, such as but not limited to glue and aerosol products, prescription or patented drugs except those for which permission for use in school has been granted pursuant to Board policy. (YSSD Board Policy No. 227) Tobacco is a substance that is controlled by federal and state law with specific age parameters, and therefore falls under the auspices of this contract. Tobacco shall include lighted or unlighted cigarette, cigar, pipe, other lighted smoking product, and smokeless tobacco in any form. (YSSD Board Policy No. 222)

Confirmed Possession or Use – The possession or use of a controlled substance can be confirmed by a member of the administration, teaching staff, coaching staff, an advisor, or a law enforcement agent.

Student Assistance Program (SAP) – Offered at the middle school and the high school, this program is used to identify and support students in need of assistance with controlled substances and/or mental health issues. (This may include such concerns as response to peer pressure and decision-making.)

Co-curricular Activities – All programs in which students are required to participate in extracurricular functions as a part of a graded class (e.g. band)

Extracurricular Activities – All programs and activities that function outside of the academic program of the school including athletic teams, clubs, and organizations that typically meet outside of the school day

Violations

Violations are cumulative from 7th grade through graduation.

Violations that occur while a student is not participating in co-curricular and extracurricular activities will be applied should the student join an activity within one calendar year of the violation.

Category 1 - Controlled Substance abuse violations which occur in school, on school property, or at school sponsored events will be reported to the principal and the Student Assistance Team. School discipline will be enforced as per the Code of Conduct. Students who are externally suspended from school cannot participate in co-curricular and extracurricular activities during the time of their suspension. Upon return to school the consequences described below will apply.

Category 2 - Confirmed Controlled Substance abuse violations that occur outside of school will be reported to the principal. Consequences for violations are listed below.

Category 3 -In the event there is confirmation of student attendance at an event or function in which peers engaged in the possession or use of a controlled substance, the student will be referred to the Student Assistance Team. The student may continue to participate in co-curricular and extracurricular activities so long as s/he wholly participates in the process and adheres to the recommendations resulting from the intake meeting. Failure to cooperate with this process will result in suspension from all co-curricular and extracurricular participation for one calendar year.

Consequences

A first offense in category 1 and 2 violations will result in suspension from all co-curricular and extracurricular participation for a period of 30 calendar days, including participation in meetings, practices, events, and competitions. The Principal or designee will define for the student the extent to which s/he may attend (but not participate in) any school functions. At no time may a suspended student wear a school uniform. The student must wholly participate in an intake with the Student Assistance Program (SAP) and follow up with any and all recommendations resulting from the intake. Failure to abide by the terms in this paragraph will result in suspension from all co-curricular and extracurricular activities for one calendar year.

A second offense in category 1 and 2 violations will result in suspension from all co-curricular and extracurricular participation for a period of 90 calendar days. The Principal or designee will define for the student the extent to which s/he may attend (but not participate in) such functions. At no time may a suspended student wear a school uniform. The student must wholly participate in an intake with the Student Assistance Program and follow up with any and all recommendations resulting from the intake. The student must also serve 10 hours of service to the school or community, pre-approved by the Principal. Failure to abide by the terms in this paragraph will result in suspension from all co-curricular and extracurricular activities for one calendar year.

A third offense in category 1 and 2 violationswill result in suspension from all co-curricular and extracurricular activities for one calendar year. The student will be permitted to attend only those activities open to the general student body on a case-by-case basis and with principal approval The student must wholly participate in an intake with the Student Assistance Program and follow up with any and all recommendations resulting from the intake. In order to be permitted to participate in any co-curricular and extracurricular activities following the suspension period, the student must submit a letter of request to the Principal who will then convene a meeting with two additional staff members comprised of the athletic director, coach(es), or advisor(s) of the organization(s) with which the student wishes to affiliate. If the student is prepared to accept the responsibility of the privilege, the principal and additional staff members will develop an action plan for reinstatement.

Co-curricular Suspension - If a student is suspended from a co-curricular activity for any length of time, alternate assignments will be provided to the student.

For all suspensions -

  • A student may not join an activity after the start of the activity to circumvent a CFP consequence.
  • A student must be academically eligible at the conclusion of the suspension in order to start/return to the activity.

I agree to these conditions for participation in co-curricular and extracurricular activities in the York Suburban School District.

SWIMMER GENERAL BEHAVIORSTANDARDS FOR A YS ‘CULTURE OF EXCELLENCE’

Beyond what the YSHS requires regarding behavior, each YS swimmer will be expected to adhere to the following behavior standards at all times:

  • Treat all athletes, coaches, officials, opponents, administrators and fans with respect at all times.
  • Arrive at all practices on time and with proper attire/equipment (ON TIME MEANS ON POOL DECK OR IN WEIGHT ROOM 5 MINUTES BEFORE PRACTICE STARTS….AND LOCKER ROOM BEFORE THAT)
  • No touching or hazing of teammates or managers will be tolerated. This includes public displays of affection.
  • Demonstrate a positive, cooperative attitude.
  • Always give your best effort.
  • Demonstrate self-discipline before, during and after practices and competitions.
  • Enthusiastically support your teammates in a positive manner.
  • Choosing to not participate in any harmful, or dangerous activities (in locker room, on bus or off premises).
  • Do not use profanity (in locker room, on bus or off premises).
  • Make good choices regarding your behavior, particularly as it relates to the use of any controlled substances prohibited by law (alcoholic beverages, anabolic steroids, drugs, drug paraphernalia, etc.) and tobacco products.
  • Abide by the provisions of the Team Handbook, Codes of Conduct and Social Media Guidelines.

Note: If a swimmer does not adhere to these standards or their actions do not align with the message of a ‘Culture of Excellence’,their opportunities to compete in meets may be reduced and/or they may be permanently dismissed from the York Suburban Swim Team.

SWIMMING PRACTICE – EXPECTATIONS FOR A YS ‘CULTURE OF EXCELLENCE’

It is expected that each swimmer gives his/her best at practice.

Sitting out is NOT AN OPTION.

There is a difference between sore and injured. Soreness occurs when muscle groups are used irregularly or sporadically. Many swimmers are ‘sore’ in pre-season and early regular season because they haven’t trained like how we train for a while. Sore swimmers can continue to train.
