Northern Rowing Council Coaching Commissioner Report to AGM 2006

Coach Education

Kate O’Sullivan delivered the first UKCC L2 course in the region in January, based on Teesside. This was also the first course to be run in the country. Candidates came from Tees RC, University of Teesside, Durham Colleges, and Durham ARC.

Dan Singleton and Debbie Connolly (with assistance from Peter Lee) are currently delivering a L2 course in Durham for Durham College students.

The demand for the L2 seems to be similar to that of the old IA, despite the increase in the price of the course. It has been agreed to try and run all courses in the region for £250 per person. Due to the increased tutoring time on the new course and the fact that courses now need to be tutored and assessed by different people, we are currently struggling to run enough courses to meet the demand with the current numbers of tutors and assessors in the region. This issue had been exasserbated by the fact that no tutor or assessor training has been run this year, and the L3 course (replacement for Bronze award) is still being piloted. This has meant that we haven’t been able to get people from the region up the required level to attend tutor/assessor training, or attend training if they were already suitably qualified. However, now that the numerous L2 courses are being run throughout the country tutor/assessor training courses are now being planned, and the L3 should be ready to be rolled out in the new year. We still need more people to volunteer to attend the courses though.

Rob Cree has delivered several Dry Instructor courses this year, for Durham PO schools, and also for Gateshead schools. Debbie Connolly delivered a pilot ‘Adaptive Dry Instructor’ course at Tees RC for members of Tees and members of local disability groups.

Club development / Volunteers

The regional Club Development Conference was held in January, and was well attended by clubs, colleges, and University’s from across the region. ARA staff came to give advice on facilities, water safety, child protection and participant welfare. NRC officers gave updates on the regional plan, coach education and the new coaching awards, event administration, and the selection process for the Junior Inter-regional Regatta. A similar event is planned for January 2007.

Training events

The regional sculling camp at Tyne in August was again organised by Peter Lee, and again very successful. Clare Leake also organised a successful camp for novices at the same time, with the novices started the week training in Durham and then linking up with those on the Tyne at the end of the week. Around 60 athletes attended the camps.

National Coaching Committee

Kate O’Sullivan has taken over as the chair of the NCC, and as such is a member of the ARA Executive Committee. Debbie Connolly has taken over as NCC secretary.
