Position Description

  • NHS Teachers are employed by and accountable to the Board of Trustees to provide planned continuity of education for students with high health needs who are in hospital, at home, or in transition back to their local school.
  • Northern Health School programmes are based on an Individual Learning Plan (ILP) for each student. ILPs are regularly reviewed, evaluated and extended.
  • Depending on the health and education needs of the student, the NHS Teacher may provide the whole education programme, an education programme in association with the student’s regular school or a programme in association with Te Kura (formerly The Correspondence School).

The NHS Teacher will:

  • Consult and work with student’s parents/caregivers, staff of the student’s local school and/or Te Kura and appropriate health professionals
  • As appropriate, work as a member of a team or teams supporting individual students. This may involve working closely with medical staff, therapists, social workers, teachers, community organisations and education and health agencies.
  • Have a good understanding of the New Zealand curriculum and be able to adapt this to meet individual student requirements.
  • Have an understanding of students with special needs and be able to adapt programmes in order to allow these students to achieve to their potential.
  • Be prepared to use ICT for teaching, planning, communicating and student records.
  • Be prepared to work flexibly within the various operational areas of the school, including working in student’s homes, in order to meet the education needs of students with high health needs

  • All students have an appropriate education programme
  • Programmes meet the students’ health and education needs.
  • ILPs are accurate and up to date, following NHS guidelines.
  • ILPs are updated and sent to parents and SE as required.
  • Te Kura programmes are delivered and there is collaboration with Te Kura teachers

Assess and record student progress /
  • Appropriate assessment tools are used to measure student progress
  • Assessment data is recorded following NHS procedures
  • Assessment data is used to inform students, parents and SE of progress.
  • Assessment data is used to inform planning of student programmes.

Develop and implement effective transition plans. /
  • All students have an effective transition plan
  • Transition plans are developed in collaboration with SE the family and appropriate medical team members.
  • Plans are communicated with the parties involved
  • Plans are regularly reviewed and updated.

Communicate effectively /
  • Emails and phone calls are responded to in a timely manner
  • Student transfers are facilitated and necessary information is communicated
  • Participation in on-line discussions, staff meetings and PD is evident.

Report to the Principal and delegated NHS leadership staff /
  • Requests for information are actioned in a timely manner

Use NHS recording systems to maintain student information /
  • Planning and assessment is recorded and updated in eTAP
  • Attendance records are accurate and up to date
  • NZQA information is checked and up to date and entries are completed as required

Person Specification

NHs Teachers will be passionate about teaching and learning and will be focused on facilitating and achieving positive outcomes for students and staff.

The successful applicant must be a trained teacher with full New Zealand registration and practising certificate and should have

  • Empathy with students who have high health needs and may have learning and/or behaviour difficulties.
  • Sound knowledge of the New Zealand curriculum at primary and secondary level.
  • An understanding of support available to students with special needs.
  • High level of consultative and collaborative problem solving skills.
  • Familiarity with individual planning systems.
  • Commitment to meeting the needs of Maori and Pacific Islands students.
  • Commitment to provide services that are culturally appropriate.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • The ability to liaise and work with parents, caregivers, professionals and agencies involved in the student’s treatment and education.
  • Effective budget management skills.
  • Ability to communicate, maintain student records and to deliver the curriculum using ICT.
  • Have a full New Zealand driver licence, be prepared to travel, as required and possibly stay overnight, to deliver education programmes to students in the most appropriate settings and to attend professional development opportunities.
  • Note: drivers under 25 are excluded from the school’s car insurance policy.

Non-Disclosure of Information

Staff are obliged to comply with all relevant statutory and regulatory requirements. These include the provisions of the Privacy Act 1993, and the Health Amendment (no.2) Act 1993 relating to the non-disclosure of medical and other information.

  • No person who is, or has been, employed by Northern Health School shall disclose to any person any information concerning the condition or medical history of any patient in any institution, other than where specifically authorized by the Act.
  • Any person who contravenes the provision of the Act is liable on summary conviction to a fine not exceeding $2,000.
  • The confidentiality of information, in regard to students, families, schools, staff, NHS or host organisations, will be maintained and information will only be used for the purposes for which it was collected.

Responsible Use of Internet and Related Technologies.

It is expected that internet and related technologies (IRT) will be used to benefit teaching and learning, but it is also understood that they may be used for personal activities. All activity must be appropriate to the school environment.

NHS uses and provides support for a Digital Citizenship model where IRT must be used in a safe and responsible manner. This agreement includes: devices, Internet and ICT systems, whether in school, personal or subsidised ownership, used inside or outside of school, for school purposes.

The school reserves the right to filter, monitor and audit its computer network, internet access facilities, computers and other school ICT equipment including stored content, email and all aspects of its use. This may include any device provided by or subsidised by/through the school or the Ministry of Education. For this purpose, any electronic data or files created or modified on behalf of the school on any ICT device, regardless of who owns it, is the property of the school.

You are responsible for:

  • The security and use of any accounts the school provides, including login and password details.
  • Acting as a role model for responsible activity online and avoiding engagement in harassing or harmful communications.
  • Maintaining confidentiality and privacy of staff, students and their families.
  • Ensuring that your actions are within the law, including copyright.
  • Taking care of all ICT equipment and reporting any problems or damage.
  • Understanding the school’s policies and procedures around digital citizenship and internet safety.
  • Notifying the school of any breach of this agreement, whether accidental or deliberate.
  • Awareness of the opportunities and challenges that these technologies provide.

Breaches of this Agreement

A breach of this agreement may constitute a breach of discipline. Involvement with objectionable material, abuse or harassment, or misuse of the school ICT could call into question the user’s suitability to be in a school environment. Such matters may be investigated by the school or applicable law enforcement agencies.
