Professional Development Level 1, 2, 3

Northeastern University School Health Institute in collaboration with the Massachusetts Department of Public Health School Health Unit has developed a three-tiered approach to professional development for school nurses. *** If you have your DESE license, you have completed Level 1.

This approach addresses the nurse new to school nurse practice in Level 1 and beginning this fall also provides programing to advance school nursing practice in Level 2. This three-tiered approach also supports the school nurse’s ability to attain, maintain, or advance the proficiency rating in the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education Educator Evaluation System. When the school nurse completes all components of Level 2 (8 components), a certificate will be awarded. Level 3 programing is in development.

Level 1 – Professional School Nurse Practice in MA Schools … Need ALL 3 programs to apply for your DESE license (Day programs) Can be taken in any order.

a. Professional School Nurse Practice in MA (2 days) $150 for 2 days

b. Medication Administration and Delegation (1 day) $75

c. Mandated Screening Training for School Nurses (1 day) $75

Level 2 - Advanced Professional School Nurse Practice (All programs 5:00-7:00 pm) ($40 per program) Fall/Spring 2015-2016

  1. Health Office Management 10/29/15 This Level 2 component will build on the health office management skills of the school nurse. It will include the physical environment, program management and utilization of resources.
  2. Red Flags in the Health Office(TBD) – Management of health concerns in the health office by body systems (3 separate programs) The Level 2 Red Flag components will address health care concerns in the health office by body systems; what to ask, who to consult, when to refer, and follow-up discussions.

c and d TO BE OFFERRED Spring 2016

c. Behavioral Health Services(2 programs) This component will explain the nursing process in delivery of behavioral health care services in school. The presentation will identify the clinical presentation and effect of Childhood Trauma and Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACE) and other frequently seen mental health disorders in children and describe the team approach for providing behavioral health services in the school setting.

d. Wellness and Prevention(2 programs) This component of Level 2 will discuss the school nurse role in developing relationships and collaborations, identifying school nurses as change agents with regard to health and academics, and how to promote the role of the school to improve student outcomes.
