GUIDELINES FOR PRE-AP COURSES FOR 2012-2013

The benefits of Pre-AP courses are numerous! Students and parents should expect courses to be more challenging, take more time, and require a different type of work than regular courses. Students of these courses should expect teachers to require an increased reading load, sophisticated writing assignments and projects, and complex problem solving. Students involved in extra-curricular activities should especially keep this in mind when designing their schedule. Pre-AP courses require energetic, involved and motivated students.

Please read the following requirements. Your signatures at the bottom indicate that you understand and agree.

  • Schedule change requests from Pre-AP to on level will require the following: parent/teacher conference and a note signed by the parent and Mr. Valamides.
  • Students who withdraw from the course at semester will not receive the weighted calculation for that semester. In order to receive the weighted calculation for rank and GPA purposes, the student must remain in the course for the entire year.
  • Students must understand that tutorials may be required in order to be successful in the course.
  • Students should generally expect homework in each course every day. Up to ½ -1 hour per course per day may be required. Some assignments may take more time for some students.
  • There are summer reading assignments for all Pre-AP English courses. Schedule changes will not be granted due to failure to complete the summer reading assignment!
  • This is an advanced course and moves at a faster pace than an on-level course.

Students will deepen their understanding of the ways writers use language to provide both meaning and pleasure for readers, and will strengthen the student’s critical thinking skills and creativity.

Pre AP Mathematics – PreAP mathematics is for seventh graders who like to learn more about why things in mathematics work the way they do. Students will take personal responsibility for completing creative projects outside of class. The PreAP math class at each grade level is a stepping-stone for students who want to take higher level math in high school. Successful completion of sixth grade PreAP mathematics is strongly suggested.

Pre AP Science – PreAP science moves at a faster pace and involves science, mathematics, and language arts in the process of problem solving. This includes research, building models, and technical writing. This class is not more work; it is at a higher level which makes it more challenging than regular science classes. Most projects are completed in class but some outside work will be required.

Pre AP Social Studies – The seventh grade PreAP Texas History course is designed to help students think and analyze higher-level social studies issues and problems related to Texas history. Students will analyze primary source documents, participate in creative activities, and complete a major project each six weeks.
