2011 Coastal Research Fellowship for Graduate Students

Purpose: Georgia Sea Grant (GASG) and the Sapelo Island National Estuarine Research Reserve (SINERR) are accepting applications for a fellowship opportunity for Georgia -based graduate students. This fellowship is designed to foster research within the boundaries of SINERR or McIntosh County, GA and address a coastal management issue in the following focus areas: climate and land use change effects on estuarine systems, sustainable growth, habitat conservation and ecosystem services, storm impacts and sea level rise, and social science of sustainable growth and hazard resiliency.

Fellowship Amount: $20,000.

Duration: Calendar Year 2011

Eligibility: Only graduate students in good academic standing, attending an accredited Georgia university or college are eligible to apply. Proposed work must be conducted at least partially within the boundaries of SINERR or McIntosh County.

Application: To apply, candidates must send a three-page (maximum) proposal, a current CV, and letter of support from a major professor. The proposal should be in 12-point, Times New Roman font, with 1-inch margins. Proposals must contain the following sections: Title (including student and major professor contact information); Description of the project including rationale and relevance; Methods; clearly defined Tasks and a Timeline to complete the tasks; declaration of any Other Sponsored Support to be Received for the project; and a detailed Budget and Budget Justification (not included in page limit). Funds may be used for any purpose related to the project, including stipends. University overhead charges are not permitted.

Deadline: Application materials must be received by 5 p.m. on December 15, 2010. Applications should be sent via e-mail in M.S. Word for Windows format to both Dorset Hurley () and Charles Hopkinson (). Incomplete and late applications will not be accepted.

Review Process: The review panel will be co-chaired by Dorset Hurley of SINERR and Dr. Charles Hopkinson of GA SG. Proposals will be ranked based on their relevance to the identified focus areas, quality of the proposed science, and adherence to the instructions provided in this call for proposals.

Award Funding: The successful applicant will be notified by Jan 4, 2011. Funds will be channeled through the fellow’s major professor, who must agree to serve as principal investigator on the project.

Final Report: At the completion of his/her term, the fellow will submit a final report to Dorset Hurley, SINERR, and Dr. Charles Hopkinson, GA SG. The fellow also will agree to work with the GA SG communication team to translate the findings into an article and/or other products. The fellow’s major professor must agree to submit progress reports, as requested, to Sea Grant via its Internet-based reporting system.
