Norfolk Schools Rugby 7s Tournaments 2012

Dear Colleagues

Please find enclosed details regarding the Norfolk Schools U12, U13, U14, U15, U16 and U18 Boys’ 7 a side Rugby Tournaments for 2012. The U12 Cup and Plate 7s Competitions are brand new events for 2012 and hopefully there will be some keen interest for this as the numbers for the U12 Emerging Schools event last term were very good. This will be played on half pitches; all the other age groups will be on full pitches/junior pitches. All timings will be confirmed by the tournament organisers but will be approximately 1.00 – 5.00pm. My thanks go to Langley, Greshams and Wymondham College for hosting these tournaments free of charge. Many thanks also to Norfolk RFU who have again sponsored the trophies for this year’s County competitions.

I realise that the dates do mean that there are a number of different age groups’ tournaments running on the same day of the week but there are no other available dates.

In order to create more balanced competition throughout the days and to get more games for those attending we still be running a Plate Competition for all of the age groups as well as the main Cup competition.

We will try to source Referees for all the tournaments, but teachers attending the event should expect to officiate matches at some stage throughout the day.

Please confirm your entry to the tournaments by either returning the Entry Form with the correct contact details for the teams or just emailing me your entries.

Wet Weather Plan

In the case of bad weather, unless it is deemed unsafe to play, the tournaments will proceed as planned. It is recommended that all players should bring waterproofs and a change of kit.

If in the event we have to cancel the tournaments, we will notify the school office by 8.30am on the morning of any of the tournaments.

If you have any other queries before the day, please do not hesitate to contact me.

SUMMARY OF PLAYING RULES at 7s RUGBY TOURNAMENTS

There are several variations in laws which apply to Rugby Sevens, primarily to speed up the game and to account for the reduced number of players. The main changes can be summarised as follows (timings for matches may be altered by the tournament organisers)

·  Seven players per team on field, squad of 12

·  Seven minute halves, though ten minute halves are allowed in the final of a competition

·  One minute half-time, two minutes in finals

·  All conversion attempts must be drop-kicked (instead of having the option to place-kick).

·  Conversions must be taken within 40 seconds of scoring a try using a drop kick

·  Three player scrums

·  Kick-offs: in sevens, the team which has just scored kicks off, rather than the conceding team, as in fifteen-a-side.

·  Yellow cards net a 2-minute suspension (instead of 10 minutes).

·  Referees decide on advantage quickly (where one play usually ends advantage, not true in fifteens).

·  If the ball is kicked into touch or over the dead ball line from a kick off it is a free kick to the opposition at the half way line.

Player Safety

The RFU strongly recommend the use of Mouth guards by all players on the day. Suitable footwear should be worn.Studs should be British Kite-mark Aluminium Studs
