Introduction
MakeaMole?What isamole?Thedictionarydefinesamoleas “asmall, insectivorous,burrowing
mammalhavinga thick-setbodywithsilkylight-browntodark-grayfur,rudimentaryeyes,toughmuzzles, and strong forefeet fordiggingand usually living underground.”Anotherdefinition of amoleis “a small growth onthehuman skin.” Theterm “mole”alsohasgreat significanceinchemistry.A molecularmole representsaunitofmeasurethatisacollectionof 6.022 ×1023particles.Thedictionarydefinesthistypeof moleas“theamountofa substance thathasaweightin grams equal to the substance’smolecularweight.”
With thisactivity, you’ll havesome fun and useyourcreativitytodesign yourownmole.Although theresultwilllooklikea small mammal, inchemistry you’ll knowit represents the6.022×1023!

Procedure
GeneralSewingHints
1. Allpattern pieces includea¼”-seamallowance.Useadoublepieceof threadwhen sewingthe mole.
2. Whenyou beginsewing,remembertohavethefabricsurfacesthatyouwantontheoutside(referred toas therightside)facing eachothersinceultimatelythemolewillbeturnedinsideout.
Cuttingthe Fabric
1. Cutout thepatternpieces (sidebody, bottom belly, andfeet)fromthepapermolepattern.Be sure toalsocutouttheblacknotchesasaprotrusionfrom eachpiece–the notchesareimportant for properalignmentwhensewingthe moletogether.
2. Obtain fabricorfelt forthesidebodypiecesof yourmole.Foldthe fabricintoadoublelayer. This willallowyou tocuttwoidenticalpiecesof fabricat once.
3. Laythesidebodypaperpatternonthedoublelayerof fabric.Pinthe patterninplaceontothe fabric.
4. Cutout thesidebodypiecesfromthe fabric,creatingtwo mirrorimagepieces.Besuretocutout thenotches.Removethe pins.
5. Obtain fabricorfelt forthebottom bellypiece.Laythebottom bellypatternon asinglelayerof
fabric.Pinthepatterninplace ontothefabric.
6. Cutout thebellypiecefrom thefabric.Be suretocut outthenotches.Removethepins.
Attachingthe Feet
1. Placethebellypieceonthetable,rightside(outside)up.
2. Placeonedropof tacky fabricglue(or Elmer’s schoolglue)on theedgeof thebellypatternthatis markedwithadoublenotch.
3. Attachaclawtothe footwithclawspointingtowardthe midlineandrightsideup.
4. Repeatforall four feet.Allow thegluetodry.
5. Alternatively,sewtheclaws inplaceonthefeet(orpinthemandsewthemwhensewingthe mole).
SewingtheMole
1. Placethetwosidebodypiecestogether withright (outside)sidestogether.Pinthetwopieces together.
2. Sewthetwo sidebodypiecestogetherfromnosetotail alongthespin(top edge)ofthe mole.
3. LocatenotchesAandBon thesewnbodypiece.Pinthebellypiecetothebodypieceswithright sidestogether andfeet inside.
4. Sewallthewayaroundthebody(thelongway)from notchAtonotchBas shownonthedotted lineon thepattern.Note:LeavethespacebetweenAandBopenon one sideas thestuffing hole.
5. Optional:Ifdesired, attachthetail from theinsideandsewitinplace.Alternately, thetail canbe attachedafterthe moleis sewn.
6. Removeall pinsandturnthe molerightside (inside)outthroughtheA toBgap. All seamswill nowbeontheinsideofthe moleandtherightsideof thefabricshouldnow beontheoutside.
7. Stuffthe molewith fiberfillstuffing. Besuretopackthemolewithplentyof stuffing, andespecially topackthelegsandfeetfirmlyas thatwillgivethe molemorestability.
8. Foldintherawedgesfrom AtoB.Pintheedgestogether,andhand-stitchtheseamfromA toB

9. Attachtheeyesandpompom or star-shapednose with fabricglue,or bysewing.
10.Sewayarn tailonto the mole,if atail wasn’taddedin Step5.
