The Organisation

Tŷ Hafan is one of the UK’s leading paediatric palliative care charities and offers the only children’s hospice service in South Wales. Tŷ Hafan providesspecialist palliative care services to life limited children, young people and their familiesto make the most of the time they have left together. For Tŷ Hafan to offer this unique service completely free of charge to nearly 260 families in Wales, it has to raise £3.7million every year.

The charity provides a specialist service embracing the full philosophy of palliative care not only at the hospice but also offers outreach services in the child’s home and beyond.

The Charity administers a multi million pound income from charitable donations, fundraising activities and events, a retail chain, a membership lottery and some government funding. The head office and hospice are based at Sully, the base for the Chair, Chief Executive and Executive Directors, where board and committee meetings are held on a regular basis.

The charity is seekingadditional Non Executive Directors (NEDs) to commence this non remunerated role later this year; necessary expenses will be reimbursed.

The Role

Tŷ Hafan expects NEDs as a minimum to:

  • provide strong strategic leadership
  • collectively accept, with other NEDs, full accountability for the planning, processes and outcomes of the charity’s actions
  • determine the goals of the charity and regularly review progress towards achieving the agreed objectives
  • ensure governance measures, both corporate and clinical, are in place and up to date
  • be the ultimate guardian of the principles and ethos which has determined the special standing Tŷ Hafan holds within its external environment and the quality of service provision given to the families.

The Person(s)

Candidates should demonstrate empathy for the culture, environment and purpose of a children’s hospice,have proven ability to work at Board level and demonstratethe ability to think strategically. He/she must also be prepared to commit time to prepare for and attend Board, other meetings, and represent Tŷ Hafan externally.

All appropriate disciplines are welcomed with special consideration given to those with clinical, health or social services, retail or legal backgrounds as well asapplications from individuals who are currently employed at a senior level within a private or public sector organisation.
