The City of Greater Geelong’s (the City) Women in Community Life Advisory Committee (WiCLAC) is proud to announce the 2017 Women in Community Life AwardsThe WiCLAC and the City established the Women in Community Life Awards in 2014. Now in it’s third year, the annual award allows the community to recognise and celebrate women and their achievements locally. The WiCLAC advises Council on matters relating to women’s participation, representation and leadership in community, while promoting and recognising the successes, milestones and participation of women.

The Women in Community Life Awards recognise women’s achievements across the Geelong region. In 2015, we celebrated these achievements with the following award category:

  • Women in Community Life Award

In 2016, we celebrated these achievements with the following award categories:

  • Women in Community Life Award
  • Women in Community Life Living with a Disability

In 2017, we are pleased to announce 2 new award categories:

  • Women in Community Life For Human Rights and Gender Equality
  • First Nations Women in Community Life

Awards will be announced and presented at an International Women’s Day event to be held on Friday, 3 March 2017. It will include acknowledging 3 nominees for each category. Winner for each category will be awarded a prize, including a Wathaurong Glass Plaque and a $500 cheque….

ABOUT THE AWARD

WHO CAN BE NOMINATED?

We are looking for women who have a passion and commitment to women in their community. They will have been working or be active in the Geelong region in a way which promotes equality, inclusion and respect for women that aligns with each Award category.

Nominees may be mentors, community leaders, industry leaders, activists, volunteers, teachers, or tireless workers! Is it the local playgroup leader? Is it the woman who supports girls in local sports? Is it the woman campaigning for refugee rights? Is it the woman who goes over and above in her area of employment, that sees what she does as more then a job – it’s a lifestyle! You tell us!

Woman leaders are found in all places, at all times and through many opportunities. Whether its……

Social - health/education/disability/community/sports/hospitality sectors

Cultural - arts/culture/community development/place-making

Economic - business/trade unions/finance

Political - civic involvement/community activism/political representation

PURPOSE

The purpose of this award is to recognise, highlight and celebrate women’s achievements, contribution and leadershipof women in the Geelong region. These awards are a key feature of an annual International Women’s Day event in Geelong.

Many women contribute incredible amounts of time and energy into their local communities, with a vast array of experiences, skills and leadership; we would like to recognise and celebrate their passion and commitment.

International Women’s Day (IWD) has been observed since the early 1900’s. IWD is now recognised as a global day to create future opportunities. It is a time to unite and mobilise to instigate change!

AWARD CATEGORIES

First Nations Women in Community Life

This new Award category for 2017 acknowledges and celebrates the outstanding leadership of an Aboriginal Woman living in the Geelong region. This award is proudly supported by Christine Couzens MP, Member for Geelong.

Women in Community Life Award

This Award acknowledges and celebrates the outstanding achievements of a woman leader in the Geelong region. This award is proudly supported by Women’s Health and Wellbeing Barwon South West

Women in Community Life for Human Rights and Gender Equality

This new Award category for 2017 acknowledges and celebrates the outstanding achievement of a Woman living in the Geelong region promoting, advocating and lobbying for Human Rights and Gender Equality. This award is proudly supported by Barwon CASA and Minerva Community Services.

Women in Community Life Living with a Disability

This Award acknowledges and celebrates the outstanding achievement and leadership of a woman in the Geelong region living with a disability. This award is proudly supported by the National Disability Insurance Agency.

The purpose of this award is to recognise, highlight and celebrate women’s achievements, contribution and leadership in the Geelong region. These awards are a key feature of an annual International Women’s Day event in Geelong.

JUDGING PANEL

The judging panel will include Women in Community Life Advisory Committee representatives.
