Unit Exam Guidelines

  1. The essay questions will ask you to choose sides in a debate (no fence sitting), interpret a work of the humanities, apply a concept, choose a work based upon a specific standard, compare and contrast works, etc. and you will need to back up your responses with specific reasons/examples drawn from the content we covered.
  2. Your responses will be graded on how well you argue for the choices you make.
  3. Each question is comprised of two parts worth 10 points each.
  4. The parts of each question are independent of each other; in other words, what you choose in one part does not affect what you choose in another part.
  5. You need to answer both parts of each question.
  6. Responses should be thorough and specific rather than partial and vague.
  7. Responses should be substantially in your own words; if you do use any quoted material, please keep the quotation brief and cite it in accordance with MLA standards.
  8. Responses to both parts of each question combined should be in the range of 250-300 words (which is about 1 typed and double-spaced page), should be written in complete sentences, and should be free of grammatical, mechanical, punctuation, and spelling errors.
  9. Your responses and reasons/examples should stay confined within the subject area of the humanities/time period/geographic region that the question is asking about.
  10. Do not use highly personal and subjective reasons/examples that are not related to the content we have covered.
  11. Do not simply copy and paste my PowerPoint or plagiarize content from our textbooks or Internet sources on the subject being asked about as your response.
  12. You are not allowed to collaborate with your fellow students on your unit exam responses.
  13. Do not waste your time and energy explaining to me why you cannot answer a question (you do not earn points for merely typing, you earn points for answering the question); put your energy and time towards actually answering the question.
  14. Please read over the questions very carefully and if any of them need further clarification or elaboration, please contact me right away.
  15. Type up all of your responses in a single word processing document and save it; you will then copy and paste your responses when you take the exam in the Quizzes section of the course website.
  16. You will submit the exam via Quizzes section of the course website.
