Georgia Milestones Assessments
Technology is a vital component of the upcoming Georgia Milestones assessments that have replaced the Criterion-Referenced Competency Tests (CRCT). The 2014-15 goal for all schools is a minimum of 30% of students testing online. That goal will increase in future years as the state will require all testing to occur online in the near future. All Roswell North Elementary School 5th graders will take the Georgia Milestones online this year. Multiple Special Education, English as a Second Language, and 504 small groups from 3rd and 5th grade may also take the assessment online depending on their individual accommodations. Please reach out to your case manager for clarification on these accommodations. The majority of students in 3rd and 4th grade will be assessed using paper and pencil. All students are being afforded more opportunities than usual this semester to interact with the computers in preparation for this inaugural year for Georgia Milestones.
The state is conducting an online readiness test in all schools for Georgia Milestones Tuesday, February 12, 2015 between 10:00-11:00. The state is conducting this test to work out any glitches that may occur when thousands of students log-on at the same time so that testing this spring can go smoothly. All RNE 5th graders will participate in this experience as well as students receiving certain accommodations. They will not be scored and we will not know how they did. It is however a great opportunity for them to practice logging on, to take a practice test created by the same company that created the Georgia Milestones, and basically interact with the testing environment they will experience this spring.
***Change of Date****Georgia Milestones – End of Grade Assessment Meeting
Due to a last minute scheduling conflict, we need to change the date of this meeting. We apologize in advance for any inconvenience this might cause.
All parents are invited to an informational meeting on Tuesday, February 24, 2015 from 8:30-9:30 a.m. in the Media Center with Laura Webb, our school test coordinator.
Beginning with the spring of 2015, Georgia will implement a new state assessment called Georgia Milestones for grades 3 through 5. These assessments will replace the former CRCT tests administered in the spring for grades 3 through 5. The purpose of the new assessments is to provide a valid measure of end of grade (EOG) student achievement of the rigorous state content standards, and provide a clear indication of the student’s preparedness for the next educational level. All 3-5 graders will take this assessment April 15-27.
RNE International Night
The 3rd Annual International Night will be held on Friday, February 27, 7-9 p.m. This is a multi-cultural event that provides our RNE family the opportunity to explore the different countries and cultures represented at our school by sharing food, arts & crafts, native dress, and cultural performances. RNE students will kick off the event with a Parade of Nations. We need your help to make this a success. Volunteer forms will arrive home this week and are also available here. Please contact Lizbeth Rodriguez or Michelle with any questions.
Pokemon Card Club
RNE will be adding a Pokemon Card club after school beginning Tuesday, February 24th from 2:30-4pm. Students must have parent signed application in order to participate. Applications will be available in the front office on Monday, February 9th. There is a 25 maximum limit to this club, so be sure to register.
Turn in Box Tops and Labels for Education NOW!
RNE's collection drive for Box Tops and Labels for Education UPCs ends soon. Simply cut out Box Tops or Labels for Education from any participating product and place them in a plastic sandwich bag. Send them to school with your child by February 12. Earlier this school year we raised over $2,000 for teachers to use to purchase needed supplies for our classrooms. Thank you for your help then and now! If you have any questions, please contact or .
Roswell Reads Children’s Book Program
The children’s book chosen for the annual Roswell Reads program is My Diary from Here to There by Amada Irma Perez. The Roswell Public Library will host a special event just for children on Saturday, February 28, 2015, at 2 p.m. Hear the children’s book read in English and in Spanish, then discuss your family history and start your own diary. The program is being led by our very own Media Specialist Mrs. Powell along with Mrs. Vicky Jaksic, the media specialist at Mt. Park Elementary.
We would love to see many RNE families at this free event!

Georgia’s SevenWonders
My name is Megan Feldman Queen and I am a 5th grade teacher at Roswell North Elementary. My students have been working collaboratively with the Seven Wonders organization to start a national campaign to discover Georgia’s Seven Wonders. Over the first semester of school, my students selected, researched, and organized eighteen different nominees for this campaign. They range from local landmarks such as Stone Mountain to the Okefenokee Swamp. Our goal for this project is to raise awareness about all the remarkable places here in our great state of Georgia. Today, we opened voting up to the public and would love to get your support. The website for voting is at We would like to get as many people around the state of Georgia (and beyond) to cast their votes. We will be unveiling the seven winners the third week of May.
If there is any way you can support this campaign by helping us spread the word, we would greatly appreciate it. Please do not hesitate to contact me for questions or more information.
Thank you,
Megan Queen and Roswell North 5th graders

Deadline is Feb. 17 for Hardship Transfers
Applications are available for parents who wish to apply for a 2015-16 hardship transfer or to renew a current hardship to another Fulton elementary, middle or high school. Parents can use an online form, available through the “Parents” section of school system’s web site, to enter their information and then print it to obtain signatures and/or supporting documentation. Although using the online form will help expedite processing time, applications also can be picked up at all schools as well as the Fulton County Schools Administrative Center.
The deadline for submitting a transfer application is Feb. 17, 2014, by 4:30 p.m., with no exceptions or extensions granted. All requests must be received or postmarked by this date and time. Applications can be sent by mail, fax or hand-delivery to:
Fulton County Schools’ Student Assignment Office
c/o Meadows Operations Center
5270 Northfield Blvd.
College Park, GA 30349
404-763-5547 fax
In addition, school system employees who have children receiving an employee hardship transfer must renew their request through the Student Assignment office. Instead of employees submitting an employee verification letter from their school or location, this year the Human Resources Department will verify employment directly with the Student Assignment office.
The Feb. 17 deadline applies to students and parents seeking a hardship transfer for medical reasons, curriculum differences, and child care situations or for employees’ children.
Parents with questions or who need more information about hardship transfers can contact the Fulton County Schools’ Student Assignment Office at 404-763-5550 or visit
