NO. R-344. JOINT RESOLUTION congratulating the 2002 Champlain Valley Union High School Crusaders divisionI girls and boys nordic ski teams.

(J.R.S. 135)

Offered by: Senator Lyons of Chittenden County, Senator Ankeney of Chittenden County, Senator Condos of Chittenden County, Senator Leddy of Chittenden County, Senator Munt of Chittenden County and Senator Snelling of Chittenden County.

Whereas, speedily covering the assigned distance of rolling and snowcovered terrain is the objective for nordic skiing competitors, and

Whereas, the talented young women who comprised the 2001-2002 Champlain Valley Union (CVU) High School nordic ski team mastered this objective with ease and confidence, and

Whereas, from the season’s first starting signal, CVU was unbeatable, as the team won each of the eight regular season meets, and

Whereas, when the state championship tournament weekend arrived in February, the Crusaders were leading contenders to clinch the Division I title at the Bolton Valley Nordic Center, and

Whereas, the tournament included an individual 5 km race on Friday and both a second individual 5 km event and a 2 km four-person relay on Saturday, and

Whereas, the unusual scoring system employed in nordic skiing counts the top four finishers for the actual team finish, while the balance of a school’s entrants displace other teams, and

Whereas, on Friday, four of the top ten skiers were Crusaders, and four of the top 16 places on Saturday were from CVU, and

Whereas, the Crusaders won the 2 km relay by a substantial margin, and the team’s overall score gave CVU the highest point total and the 2002 Division I girls nordic skiing championship, and

Whereas, this first CVU girls nordic skiing Division I championship was the product of a season-long team effort, and each skiing Crusader, including Becca Ades, Mariel Adsit, Lindsay Johnson, Anja Jokela, Stephanie Newman, Alison Nichols, Victoria Pane, Elissa Rehm, Bridget Shea, Diane Wang and Andrea LaRosa, equally deserves credit for her role in the team’s success, and

Whereas, special mention is also merited for the CVU nordic skiing boys who finished fourth in the Bolton competition, and for team member Jimmy Ades who won the Friday 5 km race and finished second in Saturday’s individual event, and

Whereas, Coach Sarah Strack and assistant coaches Doyle Strack and Eli Enman deserve commendation for their skillful leadership of these highly talented skiers, now therefore be it

Resolved by the Senate and House of Representatives:

That the General Assembly congratulates the 2002 Champlain Valley Union High School Crusaders Division I championship girls nordic ski team and the school’s outstanding boys nordic ski team, and be it further

Resolved: That the Secretary of State be directed to send a copy of this resolution to Sarah Strack at Champlain Valley Union High School.
