Principal Cheatham’s Notes

If you get my weekly call outs; you probably have noticed that always end with a reminder of the vision. The key point to that vision is being able to compete in the global market. The characteristics that it takes to compete are wanting to win, working hard even when it doesn’t feel good, seeking out help to get better, and being focused. These are all characteristics that we want to build and/or foster in Gilliam students. This mindset takes a village to promote and maintain. When students complain to us about the pressures at home we offer them support and still push them to do their best. I am asking that you do the same for us. When your student(s) talk about how we are holding them accountable at school, offer support and push them to do their best. Many of them see the greatness that lies within; but have a difficult time seeing all the extra effort it takes to reach that greatness. We have an entire building of faculty that has had to put in sleepless nights, work through school, had financial burdens, and other issues yet they have secured impressive outcomes. Help us not only encourage your student, but also hold them accountable. You may ask what does that look like? It looks like a quick dress code check either the day of school or seeing the clothes laid out the night before, checking Parent Portal for high school classes and Econnect for college classes to ask students about their progress on their grades, communicating with teachers about any questions/concerns, checking in with counselors and/or early college coordinators on next steps with classes, etc… That may sound like a lot, but the good news is that all of the afore mentioned items are not required daily. Thank you for sending your student(s) to us and we look forward to partnering with you for their success!

Have an awesome week!

L. Cheatham
