Nevada Joint Union High School Districtprovidestechnologythat isappropriateand adequateto supportinstructional purposes.Theuseofpersonal devicesbystudentsisoptional,and students who do notparticipatein BYOD willnot bepenalized.

Theuseoftechnologytoprovide educational materialisnot anecessitybut aprivilege. A studentdoesnothavetheright to usehisorher laptop or otherelectronicdevicewhileat school, it is a privilege.Whenabused, privileges will betakenaway. Each teacher hasthediscretion toallowand regulatetheuseofpersonal devicesin the classroomand on specificprojects.

Studentsand parents/guardiansparticipatingin BYODmust adheretotheBringYour Own DeviceUsageAgreement,as well asallBoard policies, particularlyStudent UseofTechnologypolicy(6143.4) andStudent AcceptableUsePolicy

Definitionof“Device”

For purposes ofBYOD,“device”meansprivatelyowned wirelessand/or portableelectronichand heldequipmentthat includes, but isnotlimited to,existingand emergingmobile communication systemsandsmarttechnologies, portableInternet devices, Personal Digital Assistants(PDAs), or portableinformationtechnologysystemsthat can beused for word processing, wirelessInternet access, image capture/recording,sound recordingand information transmitting/receiving/storing, etc. Appropriatedevicesincludealaptop,tablet (iPad,Xoom), ereader (Kindle,Nook), or netbook. Pleasenote thatcell phones, smart phones, mp3players(iPods),and other gamingdevices(Nintendo DS)arepermissiblehowever appropriate classroommanagement is recommended to make sure students are properly behaving on their electronic devices.

Internet

OnlytheInternet gatewayprovided bytheschool maybe accessed whileon campus. Connectionto third partyaccesspointsorthe establishment of ad-hoc network access viaInternet connection devices (hot-spots, air cards) is not permitted. Please note that students using their own device to gain access to the Internet via their own cellular (3G/4G) data plan is not filtered.

Securityand Damages

Responsibilityto keep thedevicesecurerests withtheindividual owner.TheNevada Joint Union HighSchool District isnot liablefor anydevicelost, stolen or damaged, including lost or corrupted dataon adevice. Ifadeviceis stolen or damaged, it will behandled through theadministrativeofficesimilarto otherpersonalartifactsthatare impactedin similar situations. Pleasecheck with your homeowner’s policyregardingcoverageofpersonal electronicdevices, asmanyinsurancepoliciescancover lossor damage.Also, ifthedevicehasalocator feature, enableit. It isrecommended that skins(decals) and othercustomtouchesareused to physicallyidentifyyour devicefromothers. Additionally,protectivecasesfortechnology areencouraged.

Safety

An importantcomponentofBYODwill beeducation aboutappropriateonlinebehaviors. Teacherswillreview cyber-safetyrules with studentsthroughout thecourseoftheschool year, and will offer remindersand reinforcementabout safeonlinebehaviors. In additionto therulesoutlinedin theseguidelines, studentswill beexpected tocomplywith all classandschoolrules whileusingpersonal devices.

ConsequencesforInappropriateUse

Inappropriateuseor violation ofTechnologyUsageor SafetyPolicyon personal equipmentmayalso resultin disciplinaryaction incoordination with policies.When astudent misusesadevice please refer to your electronic device policy in the student handbook.

StudentsandParents acknowledgethat:

  • To useapersonal devicewithintheschool, studentsmust register it byconnecting it to our “Public Wi-Fi”.
  • Studentsmust obtainteacher permission beforeusingapersonal deviceinclass, and put itawaywhen requested bytheteacher.
  • Devicesmayonlybeused toaccessesapplications, filesor Internet sites which arerelevantto the classroomcurriculum. Devicesmaynot beused for non-instructional purposes, such asmakingpersonal voice calls, text/instantmessaging, playnon-educational games, viewingnon-educationalvideos, ortocheat on assignmentsor tests.
  • Devicesmaynot beused to record, transmit or post photographicimagesor video ofaperson, or persons on campusduringschoolactivitiesand/or hours, unlessotherwiseallowed byateacher.
  • Thedistrict doesnot guaranteeconnectivityor qualityofconnection with personal devices, but will providedirectionson howto connect.
  • Theschool'snetwork filters will beappliedto personal devicesconnectedtotheschool’sInternet gateway.
  • Attemptsto bypassthefilter willresult in disciplinaryaction.
  • Printing frompersonal devices willnot bepossibleat school.
  • Personal technologyischarged prior tobringingitto schooland runsoffitsown batterywhile at school.
  • Thedistrictisnot responsiblefor themaintenanceor repair ofanypersonal technology.
  • Thedistrictisnot responsiblefor anycostsincurred dueto theuseofpersonal technology.
  • Bringingon thepremisesor infectingthenetworkwith avirus, Trojan, or program designed to damage, alter, destroy, or provideaccessto unauthorized dataor information isin violation oftheTechnologyUsage Policy. This will result indisciplinaryor legal action.
  • Processingor accessinginformation on school propertyrelatedto “hacking,”altering, or bypassing network securitypoliciesisin violation oftheTechnologyUsagePolicy. This will result in disciplinaryor legal action.
  • Theschool district hastheright tocollect andexamineanydeviceifthereisareason to believethat school policies, regulations, or guidelineson useofthedevicehavebeen violated.
