REGION: MORNINGTON PENINSULA, VICTORIA

In the August/September 2015 edition of Gourmet Traveller Wine, the expert panel (Nick Bulleid MW, Peter Bourne, Ned Goodwin MW, Huon Hooke & Toni Paterson,MW) rated the 2013 Dexter Pinot Noir the BEST SINGLE-VINEYARD PINOT NOIR (97 points) out of more than 40 stellar Australian pinots which included the likes of 2012 By Farr Sangreal, 2012 Kooyong Ferrous, 2013 Home Hill Kelly’s Reserve, 2013 Tuck’s Ridge Buckle, 2013 Hoddles Creek 1er, 2012 Bannockburn Serre, 2013 Freycinet Vineyard, 2012 Curly Flat The Curly….

“The 2013 Dexter ($50) impressed us all, combining intense strawberry fruit and oak in a supple, yet well-structured palate. The oak is obvious, but of high quality and will meld in time.” Gourmet Traveller Wine - 97 points ***** (TOP WINE)

“More than half clone MV6; destemmed whole berries elvevated to small open fermenters; part wild, part cultured yeasts, fermentation peaking at 32 C; hand-plunged until 2-3 days post-fermentation; 10 months in French barriques (21% new). Superb deep crimson, it has a highly expressive bouquet and palate, red and black cherry, plum, forest and bramble all contributing to a pinot with many years to go. 13.5% alc. RRP $50. Drink: 2025.” James Halliday – 96 points

“Medium red colour with a purple tint. The aroma is of sweet Cherry Ripe fruit, underscored by toasty smoky oak, but the fruit wins out with its rich, fruit-sweet mid-palate and great succulence. Black and red cherries. Echoes of brandied cherries. Gorgeous wine. It seduces today with its finesse, but has the power and structure to take considerable age, too. Drink 2015-2027.” Huon Hooke – 96 points

“Well I could have sworn I’d reviewed the last few vintages of this wine here, but no, it’s Campbell who’s done the last three: I’ve done the Chardonnay. Cherry, poached strawberry, brown spices, fresh mint and flowers. Light to medium bodied, fresh and pretty with poached strawberry, dried herbs and gentle toasted oak. Tannin is slaty, and feels almost feathery, a cranberried crunch and tang, then a finish that’s clean and long, with a kiss of fruit sweetness to farewell. If you’re looking for elegance, delicacy and restraint, then you’ll be well pleased. Tasted: Mar 15; Alcohol: 13.5%; Price: $50; Closure: Screwcap; Drink: 2016 - 2023+." Gary Walsh, The Wine Front - 94 points
