2006 BROWN BROTHERS PATRICIA NOBLE RIESLING (375ml) !! $36.95

REGION: KING VALLEY, VICTORIA

"Brown Brothers was the first winery to commercially (and consistently) exploit botrytisaffected grapes, making the first vintage of Noble Riesling (then called Spatlese Riesling) in 1962. Bright gold, it has an intensity of flavour which explains why it has such an armada of gold medals and trophies; the lower alcohol than traditional Australian styles (though not German) and citrusy acidity are the keys to a wonderful wine. Screwcap. 8.5% alc. Drink: to 2015 " James Halliday - 96 points

"One of Australia’s greatest sweet wines. This is one of the best with its classic rind, butterscotch and honey with a beautiful lift of fresh lemony lime. It’s rich and unctuous but the crisp riesling prevents any mouth cloying while the fresh acid provides a clean, lively finish. Heady stuff here." Ray Jordan, The West Australian – 96 points

Staggeringly good wine here, with strong botrytis influence and richly concentrated apricot and waxy floral aromas, some spiced dried lime peel and nutty savoury edges. The palate’s seamless, delivering a tube of rich, luscious apricot flavours and smooth, luscious texture, brightly extended with fine acid through to the finish. Superb.” Nick Stock, Sydney Morning Herald - 95 points

"The best Patricia Noble Riesling of the decade. Aromas of apricot nectar and rich desserts like treacle pudding swirl around in the glass. Everything suggests this is going to be a big cloying sticky. Yet there is incredible fineness on the palate and a cleansing, balancing acid backbone that only riesling can provide. We couldn't spit it out. Sealed under screwcap, this will keep for a long time." Lester Jesberg, Winewise – Outstanding

"Lower in alcohol and more delicate than before, the recent vintages of Brown Brothers pioneering botrytised sweet wines are superb. The golden '06 is a complex, sweet melange of candied citrus fruit, sweet peach, fig and honey, with a very sweet, succulent palate that's delightfully tangy and elegant. (8.5 per cent alc) Cellaring? drink over four years." ***** Ralph Kyte-Powell, Epicure Uncorked

"A complex wine, densely flavoured and very long. Marmalade, spice and orange rind are among the flavours. A cracker." Ken Gargett, The Courier Mail - 93 points

"The fruit for the Patricia Noble Riesling is grown at our Milawa vineyard which has proven over the years to be an excellent and reliable fruit source for this wine. Towards the end of vintage each year, a portion of the Riesling fruit is left to hang on the vines for late harvesting. In the warm, moist conditions brought about by morning mists and gentle autumn rains, the grapes attract the mould Botr ytis Cinerea or “Noble Rot”. This mould grows on the grape skins resulting in thinning of the skins which leads to loss of fluid from the berries, leaving them shrunken, raisined and highly concentrated in sugar and flavour. From these shrivelled grapes we produce our Noble Riesling – a delicious, rich, sweet dessert table wine. John Brown senior was the first Australian winemaker to harness the unruly mould in 1962. There are regular failures due to the impact of the weather inherent with botrytis wine styles, but the successes have been outstanding gaining national and international acclaim.

This wine is very difficult to grow and to make. The right growing conditions and the picking time are pivotal to the success of the product. The fruit for the 2006 vintage was picked in early May, between 18.60 and 21.50 Baumé with significant botrytis development. The wine was bottled with an alcohol of 8.5%, a pH of 3.42, an acid level of 7.7g/L and a residual sugar level of 167g/L.

The 2006 Noble Riesling has a bright, rich golden yellow colour. The nose has fresh lifted aromatics and classic botrytis characters like stewed apricots, butterscotch, honey, orange marmalade and citrus. All these aromas follow through to the palate which is concentrated and complex with a silky mouth feel. The high natural acidity balances the residual sweetness to provide a refreshingly clean finish." Winery Notes
