NHSG/66/08

NHS Grampian has achieved Energy Efficiency Accreditation, recognising the work undertaken by organisations to reduce both energy consumption and the resulting emissions.
The Energy Efficiency Accreditation Scheme, the UK’s independent benchmark for energy efficiency, is owned by the Carbon Trust and managed by The National Energy Foundation.
To gain the award, evidence must be shown that the organisation has achieved in three key areas: management commitment to energy efficiency, investments in energy efficiency projects, and savings. Although not generally held by many NHS bodies in Scotland, the award is a sought after standard in industry and commerce, helping to promote a organisation’s environmental credentials and aspirations. It requires the compilation of a strong evidence report and improving energy performance data which is then validated by an independent assessor.
Alex Tait, Environmental Manager, NHS Grampian, said:
”Having recently completed the Carbon Management programme sponsored by the Carbon Trust, this is a further endorsement of our commitment to really making a difference in managing our energy use and contributing towards a better environment.
“We continue to welcome support from all members of staff, patients and visitors, as we seek to raise the bar in terms of environmental awareness.”
NHS Grampian was the first Board in Scotland to complete the Carbon Trust’s NHS Carbon Management programme, which has saved 1,200 tonnes of CO2 in 2007/8 at its Foresterhill site, and aims to save more than £15 million and 103,700 tonnes of CO2 from now until 2017.
Procurement and installation of energy efficient equipment will help to contribute to this. Energy saving measures include improving efficiency of heating systems and replacing traditional lighting in hospitals. As part of NHS Grampian’s plant improvement programme, the installation of a 3.9MW Combined Heat and Power plant is proposed, augmented by a 4.5MW biomass steam boiler at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary. This alone will contribute 8,000 tonnes of CO2 per annum to the emissions reduction target.
The EEAS Award lasts for three years. Along with the certificate, NHS Grampian is also allowed to use the Energy Efficiency logo on stationery, such as letterheads and business cards. This not only promotes the standard we have attained as an organisation, but also encourages others to improve their efficiency and seek accreditation as well.
