LP/ICSA Men's Singlehanded Nationals

Southern Cal

November 2-4, 2012

Laser

Friday, November 2:

The top 18 men and 18 women singlehanded college sailors from around the country descended upon sunny Southern California and started sailing today in the 2012 LaserPerformance Sailboats/ Intercollegiate Sailing Association (ICSA) Singlehanded Nationals off of the Belmont Veterans Memorial Pier in Long Beach, CA.

After a brief delay waiting for wind racing got underway in a nice southerly sea breeze ranging from 4 to 10 knots. Erika Reineke of Boston College and Chris Barnard of Georgetown Sailing got off to a quick start and are leading the regatta after 6 races.

“I’m pretty stoked about it (the regatta),” said Reineke. “Avoid the big mistakes and tacking advantage of the bigger shifts has been the key to doing well. “When asked about sailing back in Southern California, Chris Barnard said, “It’s great to be back sailing on my home waters in the sunny weather. My boat speed has been a big advantage and I’ve also avoided having any big mistakes.”

Still the racing is very close with Juan Maegli of the College of Charleston only 2 points behind Barnard. Meanwhile, Reineke has a larger lead of 12 points over 2nd place Lauren Cefali of the Coast Guard Academy.

The women, sailing Laser Radials, are competing for the Janet Lutz Trophy. The men, sailing Laser Full Rigs, are competing for the Glen S. Foster Trophy. Each sailor has earned a spot by qualifying at championship regattas in their respective conferences.

The winners of each fleet will be invited to compete for the US SAILING O’Day Trophy which is the National Singlehanded Championship for all sailors in the United States.

Event Chairperson, Mike Segerblom said, “It is great to see all of the Southern California natives return here to sail for this championship. We are expecting another great day of racing tomorrow.”

Saturday, November 3:

After a brief delay waiting for wind racing got underway in a nice westerly sea breeze ranging from 4 to 10 knots. “The breeze came up a little earlier today allowing for great racing. With excellent conditions we were able to complete 8 races today and have 2 races to be sailed on Sunday,” said regatta chairperson Mike Segerblom.

Erika Reineke of Boston College continued to sail with speed and break away from the fleet over the course of the day. After 16 races Reineke clinched the regatta by having a 46 point lead, taking home the Janet Lutz Trophy. The competition from the rest of podium places is very close with Mayumi Roller of St. Mary’s College is in 2nd with 69 points and Claire Dennis of Yale College is in 3rd with 97 points in the women’s fleet.

“It’s been really fun,” said Reineke. “I had good starts and sailed well.” Meanwhile, the competition between Southern California native sailing for Georgetown, Chirs Barnard and Guatemalan sailing for Charleston, Juan Maegli continued to heat up throughout the day in the men’s division. After eight more races Maegli took a commanding lead of 17 points, overtaking Barnard, inching closer to winning the Glen S. Foster Trophy. Still there is a protest pending and the result of the protest will change the results. “There have been great conditions. I focused on having really good starts and staying in the front of the fleet,” said Maegli.

Sunday, November 4:

After a delay waiting for wind, racing got underway in a nice westerly sea breeze ranging from 4 to 10 knots and Juan Maegli sailing for the College of Charleston went into the day with a plan, “It was my goal to stay away from the fleet and protect my lead. Fortunately, my plan worked and I got a big lead during the first race of the day.” Maegli clinched the regatta after the first race of the day and enjoyed a stress free second race knowing he had just won the national championship, but this is not the final stop for him. “I’m off to Peru next week to sail in a training regatta for the Guatamalan Olympic team.” Maegli finished 7th in the 2012 Olympic Games and plans to campaign to sail again in the 2016 Games.

Meanwhile, Erika Reineke of Boston College continued to sail with speed and broke away from the fleet over the course of the day. She won the regatta yesterday, but continued to show her skill today.

Everyone in attendance enjoyed the event, especially the native Southern Californian’s. Nevin Snow, of San Diego and sailing for Georgetown, said, “It’s great to be back in Southern California. The weather is way better here and I’ve been sailing well.” He finished his first collegiate national championship regatta tied for 7th with another freshman San Diegan, Olin Paine sailing for Fordham.

“The breeze was much better than predicted for today. The offshore breeze provided some challenges and as a result we decided to move the course further out to sea for the last race of the regatta.” said regatta chairperson Mike Segerblom.

2012 Kennedy Cup

U.S. Naval Academy

November 3-4, 2012

Navy 44’S

The Kennedy Cup, Intercollegiate Sailing's Big Boat National Championship, was contested in the Chesapeake Bay on 2/3/4 November. Ten teams from around the country vied for the chance to become this year's winning crew. Although Hurricane Sandy delayed preparation and made travel difficult for many schools, all entrants were still able to make it to Navy for the event, which was finely run by PRO Wayne Bretsch and Head Judge Ken Morrison.

Two races were run on Friday with NW winds ranging from 12-25 knots. Cal Maritime demonstrated great comfort with the strong wind by leading the fleet with a score of 2-1. They were closely followed by the Naval Academy and NY Maritime.

On Saturday, sailors faced even colder and windier conditions. Temperatures reached only into the upper 40s and the wind speed increased throughout the day from 15 knots to near 30 by the end of the day. The crew from the Naval Academy sailed almost flawless races to lead the day with three first place finishes. Cal Maritime and Kings Point rounded out the top three places.

Sunny skies and gentler winds came in for Sundays two races. Genoas were used for the first time all regatta, which proved much to the liking of Mass Maritime who scored 3-1 to lead the day.

In the end, it was the team from the Naval Academy who was the most consistent throughout the event. Winning five of seven races, Navy ended up winning the Kennedy Cup National Big Boat

Championship. With the victory, they earned the right to represent the US at the Student Yachting World Cup in France in 2013. Sailing for the Naval Academy were skipper Steve Jaenke, Charlie Johnson, Sam Ross, Kelsey Ragsdale, Sean Brown, Andy Beeler, Roscoe

Thomas, and Ethan Madison.

Saturday:

The wind was from the south at about 15knots with higher gusts making the sailing interesting for the sailors doing a beach launch. It was mostly cloudy with temperatures in the high 50’s. Later Saturday morning a quick thundershower forced the suspension of racing. However, PRO Nancy Glover with assistant Rick Lilley were able to get racing going again and completed 4 races in each division before dark. Chief Judge Betsy Altman was on hand but there were no protests.

Sunday:

While the sailors assembled at the normal reporting time, they were greeted by winds in the middle twenty’s and gusts in the thirties. It was decided to call racing for the day as the forecast was for the winds to pick up during the day. The trophies were awarded and the boats packed up for an early trip back to campus.

Saturday, November 17:

Saturday started with light winds less the five knots out of the west south west with gusts maxing out at 6 knots. By noon winds had shifted to 3 knots from the east. Water was flat, and for November in Chicago the temperature was warm at 47 degrees. Boats left the dock at 9:15am with racing commencing at 9:45am, and the last race started at 3:47pm with the last boat out of the water at 4:20pm. Sailing was close and competitive with multiple teams vying for first. At the end of the day Michigan was in the lead with four other teams in contention. After one day we had completed 6 A division races and 4 B division races.

Sunday, November 18:

Sunday started with light and variable winds 3 knots and less out of the south. Boats left the dock at 8:45am and racing commenced at 9:11am. We were able to get in 3 B division races and 2 A division races before the wind shifted to the east and the wind died. The fleet was put under postponement at 1:35pm and the teams were taken off the water by crash boat then. Though the race committee attempted to scare up wind. The regatta was called at 2:50pm. Michigan was able to hold onto their lead and ended up winning the regatta as well as both divisions. The last time Michigan won the Timme Angsten Trophy was in 1977, thirty five years ago. Overall Wisconsin placed second and Minnesota placed third. In A Division Wisconsin was second and University of Buffalo third. In B division Wisconsin was second and Bates College third. Teams were on the road by 3:45pm.
