News Release Incident: Motor Vehicle Crash

On Wednesday October 11, 2017 at approximately 4:45 pm the Egg Harbor Township Police Department responded to the Black Horse Pike in the area of Tower Avenue, in the Cardiff section of the township, for a motor vehicle crash.
A 2002 Honda Accord driven by Anthony Palmeri, 37 years of age from Mays Landing was traveling east on the Black Horse Pike, in inside lane of travel, when he failed to stop for traffic in front of him. Palmeri rear ended a 2014 Ford Focus operated by Aaron Coppens, 29 years of age from Egg Harbor Township. Coppens had been stopped in traffic for a red signal at Tower Avenue. Coppens vehicle was struck with significant force by Palmeri.Due to impact,Coppens vehicle was pushed off the roadway towards the center grass median. Coppens vehicleimpacted thevehicle stoppeddirectly in front of him as he left the roadway, a 1995 Lexus 300 operated by Ervin Santiago, 40 years of age from Egg Harbor Township.Following the impact with Coppens, Palmeri's vehicleveered off towards the inside lane of travelwhere his vehicle impacted the rear of a 2014 Subaru Forester operated by Gail Hingston, 70 years of age from New York state.
Hingston was treated at the scene for a head injury and released. Coppens was treated and transported to Atlantic Care City Campus for moderate injuries. Palmeri was treated and transported to AtlantiCare Mainland Campus for moderate injury.
The roadway was closed for approximately 1 hour while it was investigated and cleared by MPO II Robert Moran and Officer Joseph Griffiths of the Egg Harbor Township Police Department Traffic Safety Unit. The Cardiff Volunteer Fire Company responded and utilized the Jaws of Life to extricate Palmeri from his vehicle. Palmeri was charged with DWI, Reckless Driving and Careless Driving.
