CHAPLAINS MESSAGE: A cardinal could be a bird or a baseball player from St. Louis or you could be talking about Blaise Cupich. The whole archdiocese is excited about the announcement of Archbishop Cupich being named to the College of Cardinals. But we here at St. Mary’s in Bellevue, are especially proud because he was a former pastor for a brief time. I don’t see the same thing happening again to your newest pastor. A cardinal is a man appointed by the pope to elect the next pope. A cardinal can be any bishop, priest, deacon or technically even a layman. Cardinals wear red cassocks because they are supposed to be willing to die for their faith and church. There are a total of 120 voting cardinals throughout the world. That is how many can fit into the Sistine Chapel. There may be more than these 120 cardinals but they would all be past the age of voting. I believe that once a cardinal finishes his 80th year he is no longer eligible to vote and cannot participate in the conclave. Conclave means to be locked in. The pope is constantly naming new cardinals as the old ones retire to maintain that number of 120. The pope can also name men past the age of 80 as a non-voting cardinal just for the honor. I don’t see even this happening to your newest pastor so we must celebrate with Blaise Cardinal Cupich in his new awesome responsibility. May God bless him! Fr. Del Lape

This list is for only our Brother Knights and the Widows of our deceased Brothers in order that those members and friends that are not on our prayer chain are made aware of their need for prayers. Should we have missed anyone in need of prayers, please contact Ray Guggenberger or Ray Romero. Please contact Ray Guggenberger via phone or email if you know of a Brother Knight or a widow of a deceased Brother Knight who is sick or in distress.

FS REPORT: Congratulations to Doug Cutter and Bill Dynek, Jr. on obtaining Honorary Membership in our Order.

GRAND KNIGHT: October was another busy month. Our annual spaghetti dinner was a success, but with the numbers down a bit from last year. Thanks to all the Knights who helped with the preparation and serving of the dinner. The fall highway cleanup was performed and the Knights who helped enjoyed a great breakfast afterwards. Thanks to Brother Walt Hollars who directed and assisted in the cleanup. The annual candy drive to raise funds for persons with intellectual disabilities was also held on two different weekends under the supervision of DGK Joe Ruff and Brother Cory Billings. Thanks to all of you who worked one or more shifts. November will also be a busy and important month. On Nov 11 we will have our annual Memorial Mass to remember all four brother Knights who have passed away this year. The biggest event will be on Saturday, Nov 12 in our hall. The event is the 3rd Annual Blue Coat Awards Banquet where First Responders will be honored. This year, we will recognize the top three Police Officers and the top three Firefighters from both Bellevue and Offutt. This year it is even more important to show our support to our First Responders as many officers have been attacked and killed in various locations in our country. Our First Responders don’t know what might confront them each day when they show up for work. Please come out and support this important function and show your support for this and other functions in which our council is involved. Have a safe November and a Happy Thanksgiving.---GK Ray Romero Sr.

THE HOLY FATHER’S GENERAL INTENTIONS FOR NOVEMBER 2016: That the countries which take in a great number of displaced persons and refugees may find support for their efforts which show solidarity.

THE HOLY FATHER’S MISSION INTENTIONS FOR NOVEMBER 2016: That within parishes, priests and lay people may collaborate in service to the community without giving in to the temptation of discouragement.

FIELD AGENT REPORT: As the field agent for this council, you know how important spouses can be to the charitable works of the Order. If you’re married, your wife is probably involved in a few of the many events that happen each fraternal year. This support adds great value and impact to what a council can achieve. When the Order was founded in 1882, Father Michael J. McGivney and the other brave men were setting out to protect Catholic families, but especially wives and children. Today, we remain committed to this mission by offering insurance products and fraternal benefits designed with that goal in mind. One specific policy rider that you may not know about is called Spousal Waiver of Premium. This rider is unique to the Knights of Columbus philosophy of helping our widows. This rider is available on most permanent and Discoverer plans purchased at standard rates by a member and his wife on the same day. When both spouses apply, the rider provides for waiver of premiums on the spouse’s contract in the event of the insured’s death. Best of all, for members and spouses ages 18 to 60, this waiver can be added for no charge. The rider stays in effect until the spouse attains age 65 or certain other triggering events occur. Our products are designed with your needs and budget in mind. With a solid portfolio of life insurance, long-term care, disability income and retirement products, the Knights of Columbus can help you meet all of your financial goals. To learn more about these solutions, contact me today. God bless, Douglas Kelly (402) 884-0364
