Cruising

Newport 30 Summer Cruise: San Pablo Yacht Club – Saturday July 20th, 2002.

(Reported by Commodore Gary Boell)

The Newport 30 Cruise this year was hosted by the San Pablo Yacht Club, and as in years past, they greeted us with outstanding hospitality, a clean club, and great food and drink. Despite our rather intimate get together, I received immediate feedback that everyone in attendance had a delightful time. We only had two brave crews sail to the event, and everyone else negotiated by land barge. In attendance:

Everyone had a round of drinks before dinner, and discussed a variety of topics concerning the status of our Newport group. There was a strong interest in cruising to Angel Island next year, in an attempt to promote more family participation through cruising. I’m sure we will hear more about this opportunity during the planning of the coming year.

Our dinner meal consisted of a lavish spread of Cuban style “spicy” chicken, with sides of Spanish rice, spicy potatoes, and marinated veggies. We were also offered a garden salad, with all the toppings, and hot rolls. As a special treat for our sailing group, we were offered a lemon rum cake that was heavily saturated with rum. Our chef could not have found a more receptive crowd. An additional note here – Mark Palmer’s daughter Paloma, jumped in to help serve our desert – nothing spilled, nothing dropped – great job!!

Our group did briefly tour both of the boats that sailed in. Points of interest here focused on the newly fitted gooseneck on Zeehond thanks to the efforts of Chris Evanoff at Svendsen’s Metal Shop. His efforts resulted in an all-stainless unit that could be simply screwed back into the existing holes in the mast, without change or modification. We had an onboard tour of Rich Gill’s IN TRANSIT TOO, and everyone agreed that it was the most “sea going” Newport 30 we had all ever seen. The boat had all Beckson windows, a radar tower in the stern, and very detailed cabinetry throughout.

Our evening concluded with a brief discussion about our upcoming attendance at the Newport 30 Year End Dinner located at Richmond Yacht Club on November 16th. We exchanged Newport 30 stories, myth, and folklore around the circular fireplace while sipping Irish coffees in the club bar until nearly 10:00pm. My personal thanks to the Pt.San Pablo Yacht Club for providing such a nice venue for this event.

Racing

August is one of the heaviest months on the summer racing calendar. It starts with the Second Half Opener (technically July, but effectively August) on the last weekend of July, followed by the Lightship II ocean race 8/3, the South Bay race 8/10, and ends up with the City Front race 8/24. The Lightship race is a non-counter, so turnout was light. The rest of you guys missed a fun time coming home. Fast Freight was first, and Zeehond second for the ODCA start. Hot Chocolate was second in MORA II. Through August 10th, and using two of the three throw outs, here are the fleet standings.

Position / Name / Races / Gross Score / Throw Outs / Net Score
1 / Harry / 8 / 13 / 6 / 7
2 / Fast Freight / 8 / 22 / 11 / 11
3 / Hot Chocolate / 7 / 33 / 14 / 19
4 / Zeehond / 8 / 32 / 11 / 21
5 / Ruckus / 4 / 40 / 14 / 26
6 / Yachyd Da / 4 / 45 / 13 / 32
7 / Zinfandel / 2
8 / Me Me / 2

We still have two races to go, and anticipate six qualifiers for the season. Qualifiers will receive a trophy from the YRA, and an award from the Newport 30 Fleet.

Racing Skippers Meeting

There will be a skippers meeting for all actively racing skippers, and all individuals who think that they might be interested in racing some time in the future. Even if you are not planning on racing next year you are invited. We will discuss possible changes in the qualifying season, preferred racing venues, crew, supported winter races, and a bunch of other stuff. If you want to find out how to have more fun with your boat, this is the meeting to come to. Meeting will start at 10:00 AM, Saturday September 28, at Commodore Gary Boell’s house 1290 Sanderling Island, Point Richmond. If you get lost call (510) 237-7600.

Maintenance Alert

One of our boats reported problems with dry rot at the chain plates earlier this year. Dry rot is caused by fresh water (i.e. rain, etc.) getting in to the wood bulkheads through the deck slot at the shrouds. This is a weak spot on all fiberglass boats with inboard shrouds attached to bulkhead mounted chain plates - most boats built from the 1960s through the 80s. If you have not re-bedded your chain plates for a few years you should check them out before the rains come. The following was taken from the Newport 30 web site.

“Sealing the chainplates should be done every year or two, depending on the amount of sailing you do. I find that I get the longest life of a caulk job when I secure the mast with a halyard to the toerail, unfasten the shrouds from the chainplate (by tightening the halyard, I don't loosen the turnbuckle), remove the chainplate completely, thoroughly clean the slot in the deck, place the chainplate through the slot in the deck (pause with the chainplate 3/4" above where it lines-up with the bolt holes in the bulkhead), caulk liberally, drop the chainplate the remaining 3/4", and caulk again.”

Annual Dinner Meeting

Mark your calendars - the Annual Dinner and Awards Banquet will be November 16, at the Richmond Yacht club. RYC did a great job for us last year, and they promise to do it again this year. This is the stellar social event of the year - you really, really don’t want to miss it.
