Nature and Purpose of Agency

New York Road Runners is a non for profit organization whose goal is to give everyone on the planet both a reason to run and the means and opportunity to keep running and never stop.Over the past 55-plus years, the organization has grown from a local running club to a global champion of the running movement.We arethe world’s premier community running organization, and our efforts and events serve all runners and active individuals, from beginners to professional athletes: the young, the elderly, and the underserved of all abilities.We touch the lives of over 400,000 New Yorkers throughout the five boroughs, and runners around the world, through a wide variety of events and programs for people of all ages.

Tasks Available For Students

Bag Check Attendant

Ensure that runners' bagsaresafely stored and appropriately tagged; runners may not leave bags in the bag-checkpen without the correct bag-checktag attached.

Start Marshal

Assist with the smooth and successful start of the race.

Finish Marshal

Keep spectators off the race course and out of the emergency lane in the pre-finish area.

Post-Race Food Attendant

Assist in the set up and distribution of water, apples, and bagels to finishers.

Course Marshal

Serve as the eyes and ears of the race.

Fluid Station – Great option for groups of 20-50

Our larger 5 Borough Series races require fluid stations at each mile. Races vary from 6.1 miles to 13.1 miles, and are in each borough of New York City. Fluid Station volunteers set up and break down the water and Gatorade stations along the course. A group leader is required to attend a pre-race training and check in volunteers race morning. A NYRR Volunteer Leader will facilitate with an orientation and the functionality of the station.

In order to volunteer at NYRR you need to set up a profile and register on their website

once you do that you will be able to assess the calendar of events and set up a time that fits your schedule and needs. They have events throughout the five boroughs of New York City.

Time Requirements

Time requirements will vary depending on the event and type of service you decide to sign up for. Once you will create your profile on you will have access to see upcoming events and time requirements for service.

Directions will vary depending on the event/site/date you sign to serve at.
