Address barThe location in Internet Explorer in which you enter the address of the webpage you want to view.(IB 2)
copyright A protection granted by law to the author or creator of an original work who creates a tangible expression of that work or creation that says the work cannot be used by another without permission from the author or creator. (IB 21)
domain name A unique string of letters and/or numbers that are easy to remember, such as microsoft.com. (IB 5)
Favorites CenterA feature in Internet Explorer that provides tools for saving favorite webpages and viewing a history list of previously visited webpages. (IB 3)
Favorites listA feature in Internet Explorer that you can use to store and organize a list of webpages you want to revisit. (IB 17)
History list A feature in Internet Explorer that tracks the webpages you visit over a certain time period, not just during one browsing session. (IB 15)
hits Pages returned in search results that contain content that matches your search words. Hits are generally organized in order of relevancy. (IB 12)
home pageThe webpage that appears when the browser starts. The main page of a website is also called the home page. (IB 3)
hyperlink Text or a graphic that, when clicked, connects to and displays another part of the webpage or a different webpage.Also called link. (IB 3)
intellectual property All creations of the human mind, such as original ideas and creative works presented in a form that can be shared or that others can recreate, emulate, or manufacture. On a webpage, intellectual property includes the text, images, and videos on the page, as well as the design of the page itself. (IB 21)
InternetAworldwide collection of computer networks that allows people to communicate and exchange information. (IB 4)
Internet service provider (ISP) A company that provides Internet access by connecting your computer to one of its servers via a telephone or cable modem. (IB 4)
IP address A unique number consisting of four sets of numbers from 0 to 255, separated by periods (such as 216.35.148.4), that identifies the server or computer connected to the Internet. (IB 5)
keywords Specific words and phrases that describe a topic of interest and can be used to search for information on that topic. (IB 2)
plagiarism Failure to cite the source of material that you use in producing your own work. (IB 22)
protocol A set of rules that computers use to exchange files. Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP) and File Transfer Protocol (FTP) are two of the most common protocols used on the Internet. (IB 5)
public domain When anyone is free to copy a given piece of work without requesting permission from the last copyright holder. (IB 22)
search box A location on a webpage in which you can enter keywords,which are specific words and phrases that describe a topic of interest. You then click the search button and the browser displays a list of pages pertaining to your topic. (IB 2)
search engine A website used to locate webpages related to the keywords you enter. Search engines use a program called a spider or bot to compile databases of webpages that are indexed by keywords. When you enter keywords in a search engine, it searches its database to find webpages that include those keywords, and shows the results as a list of links to those webpages. (IB 9)
search query The translation of your original question into a form that a search engine can understand. A search query is built from the keywords you identified as most related to your topic. (IB 11)
tabbed browsing Displays multiple webpages in the same browser window. (IB 13)
tabs Used to open multiple webpages simultaneously in one browser window. (IB 2)
thumbnail Miniature image of a picture. (IB 13)
URL (uniform resource locator) The address of the webpage you want to view. (IB 2)
web (World Wide Web) A collection of electronic documents or files—called webpages—that are available through the Internet. (IB 4)
webbrowserA program that locates, retrieves, and displays webpages. (IB 2)
web server A computer connected to the Internet that manage the display of the webpages. (IB 4)
websiteA collection of related webpages connected by hyperlinks, or links, which you click to move from one webpage to another. (IB 4)
