Job Description

Job Title: Senior Network Administrator

Based At: College – Camborne (but with a need to travel between sites)

Responsible For: The effective operation of the College’s network

Responsible To: Head of IT

Salary: Business Support Staff, £30,265 per annum

Duties:

1.  Responsible for maintaining the stability of the College’s network.

2.  Responsible for maintaining the health of the organisations fileservers within a VMware environment

3.  Responsible for managing Active Directory Services

4.  Installing and configuring network servers, switches and routers.

5.  Responsible for monitoring the condition of WAN links. Liasing with service providers as appropriate.

6.  Responsible for managing and maintaining the College’s firewall

7.  Responsible for implementing an effective data back-up strategy and for undertaking daily security archives of all operational fileservers.

8.  Creation and maintenance of approximately 130,000 user accounts.

9.  Maintaining the College’s DNS and DHCP services.

10.  Undertaking regular file server audits, and for producing monthly reports of software license utilisation.

11.  For carrying out the College’s security strategy, ensuring that all servers and workstations are updated with vendor security patches.

12.  For carrying out the College’s antivirus strategy, with particular regard to ensuring that the College’s network remain free from computer virus.

13.  To work as part of the Information Technology Services Team to deliver a consistent user interface to all users, by creating and tuning workstation configurations.

14.  To monitor the network performance and to report findings to the Head of Information Technology Services.

15.  To provide occasional cover for the Information Technology Services Help Desk.

16.  To provide support and advice to staff and students on effective use of the College network.

17.  Responsible for the supervision of junior staff.

18.  To undertake training and development as required

19.  To undertake any other duties as required

Person Specification

Terms and conditions of service:

Cornwall College Business Support Staff (see attached summary sheet). Full terms and conditions will be summarised in a contract of employment issued on appointment to the post.

Any special conditions relating to the post:

The postholder will be expected to work a 37 hour week with variable working hours between the hours of 07:00 and 21:00. Occasional weekend work will be required. Cornwall College currently operates across numerous sites in Cornwall, Devon, and Worcester, as well as working with partners across the country. The post holder must hold a current driving licence, and be prepared to travel to other sites. This travel may require the post holder to be away from home overnight. Due to the need to travel regularly between sites the loss or withdrawal of a driving license is likely to lead to dismissal.

Background Information

The College has a Windows network that comprises of approximately 6000 workstations serviced by 150 fileservers in a VMware environment that spans 8 campuses and 10 other operating locations throughout the south-west and beyond. The main OS is Windows Server, SQL Server & Exchange. Increasingly services are being migrated to Office365, as well as operating in a hybrid on-premises/Office365 mode.

Network services are delivered over a Cisco network.

The College’s network comprises of a fibre optic backbone on each campus, with mainly structured cabling (Category 6 UTP). Wide Area Network service is provided by a private leased network connecting all campuses together.

Applications software consists of mainly Microsoft Applications, but also includes specialist applications for CAD and Multimedia development.
