TEACHING AND LEARNING RESPONSIBILITY 1

Subject to weighting criteria

In addition to the contractual duties of a school teacher set out in the Schoolteachers Pay and Conditions Document that the Headteacher may reasonably direct from time to time, the main responsibilities of the post are outlined below. In all cases, the attention of colleagues is drawn to the application of the criteria to the relevant TLRAs in order to determine spot salary points.

The main purpose is to ensure every child matters and that they gain fulfilling learning experiences, optimizing their potential and achievement. Most notably, to ensure that they gain or exceed their individual value added predictions.

1. PURPOSE AND ACCOUNTABILITY

Teachers receiving Teaching and Learning Responsibility Payments provide professional leadership and management for their school/subject area(s) to secure high quality teaching, effective use of resources and improved standards of learning and achievement for all pupils. They are accountable for a significant, specified responsibility focused on teaching and learning, that is not required of all classroom teachers.

2. GENERIC/TEACHERS

2.1 You are to carry out the duties of a school teacher as set out in Pay and Conditions Document 2005 and subject to any amendments due to government legislation. This includes any duties as may be reasonable directed by the Headteacher.

2.2 All staff are expected to uphold the school’s principles and policies which underpin good practice and the raising of standards.

2.3 Demonstrate a thorough and up-to-date knowledge of the teaching of your subject and take account of wider curriculum developments which are relevant to your work.

2.4 Consistently and effectively plan lessons and sequences of lessons to meet pupils’ individual learning needs.

2.5 Consistently and effectively use a range of appro0priate strategies for teaching and classroom management.

2.6 Consistently and effectively use information about prior attainment to set well-grounded expectations for pupils and monitor progress to give clear and constructive feedback.

2.7 Demonstrate that, as a result of your teaching, your pupils achieve well relative to the pupils’ prior attainment.

2.8 Take responsibility for your professional development and use the outcomes to improve your teaching and pupils’ learning.

2.9 Make an active contribution to the policies and aspirations of the school.

3. POST OF ADDITIONAL TEACHING AND LEARNING RESPONSIBILITY

A teacher receiving a payment for a Teaching and Learning Responsibility should demonstrate knowledge and understanding of:

  • School improvement and effectiveness strategies including the process of school self evaluation
  • Processes and systems for quality assurance within subject area(s)
  • Principles and practices in relation to managing learning and teaching, people, policy and planning, resources and finance
  • Principles and practices of effective leadership and management of change
  • The application of information and communications technology (ICT) to learning, teaching and management of the subject area(s)
  • Principles of curriculum planning
  • Financial planning and resource planning

3.1 Impact on educational progress beyond your own pupils:

  • Develop and Implement policies and practices for the subject area which reflects the school’s commitment to high achievement, consistent with national and school policies
  • Establish short, medium and long term plans for the development and resourcing of the subject (or area of responsibility).
  • Monitoring the progress made in achieving subject plans and targets and evaluate the impact on teaching and learning

3.2 Influencing the teaching practice of others positively:

  • Assist and develop subject teams and individuals to enhance performance (e.g. induction, coaching, mentoring and monitoring) and share good practice (e.g. NQTs, GTPs and UQTs); encouraging staff to keep abreast of recent curricular and pegagogical developments
  • Accountability for the Performance Management Review for Teachers and/or Support Staff.
  • Develop and apply observation techniques for the measurement and analysis of the quality of learning taking place within a designated area.
  • Plan, delegate and evaluate work carried out by team(s) and individuals.
  • Create, maintain and enhance effective relationships between staff, and between staff and pupils.
  • Liaise with other Departments in order to encourage cross curricular co-operation.

3.3 Accountability for subject/curriculum area or pupil development:

  • Provide guidance on a choice of appropriate teaching/learning methods.
  • Develop and Implement Systems for recording individual pupil’s progress; including formative and summative assessments.
  • Ensure schemes of work are developed appropriately
  • Ensure that the quality of students’ work is frequently assessed, organize the setting and marking of tests and monitor standards across the Department

TLRA 1 In Addition to the Above

Impact on educational progress beyond your own pupils:

  • Take a lead role in an aspect of whole school development and/or with specific and relevant targets relevant to Teaching and Learning
  • Take a lead role in developing links within the school and outside the school to enhance school improvement and pupil attainment
  • Co-ordinate, strengthen subject areas within faculty responsibilities
  • Ensure involvement, commitment and effective communication of information and discussion of ideas among staff by holding regular minuted Faculty meetings
  • Advise the Line Manager/Headteacher on agenda, times, dates of meetings and matters discussed. Consult on deliberations before implementation

Influencing the teaching practice of others positively:

  • Provide consistent professional support, guidance and encouragement and act as a role model for colleagues within the school

Accountability for subject/curriculum area or pupil development:

  • Lead the whole school/sector on new teaching, learning and curriculum initiatives

Line Management:

  • To have line management for a significant number of people, determined as 5 colleagues (FTE), engaged in significant practice within the line management of responsibility
