Sinai Health System-Business Integrity Office/Corporate Compliance Externship

Located on the West and Southwest sides of Chicago, Sinai Health System is comprised of Mount Sinai Hospital, Holy Cross Hospital, Sinai Children’s Hospital, Schwab Rehabilitation Hospital, Sinai Medical Group (which encompasses approximately 20 outpatient clinics), Sinai Community Institute, and Sinai Urban Health Institute. Together, the entities provide inpatient and outpatient services and community based programs. Our 870 physicians on staff provide more than 27,000 inpatient admissions, manage 97,600 emergency cases and deliver 2,500 babies annually. Sinai partners with nine Federally Qualified Health Centers to provide a complete continuum of care, and Sinai also participates in coalitions such as Trauma Response and Intervention Movement (TR4IM) and the Southwest Organizing Project (SWOP), which combat violence and social barriers in our community.

Externships for credit only: The Corporate Compliance (a.k.a. Business Integrity) Office at Sinai Health System is seeking a student with an interest in healthcare compliance, strong analytical and organization skills, and an excellent ability to communicate to work under the supervision of the Director of Audit and Compliance and assist in maintaining the Business Integrity Office’s day-to-day operations. This role will expose the student to the dynamic regulatory environment governing health systems as well as the way in which a compliance department in an urban, safety-net hospital functions. Candidates should have an interest in regulatory compliance, including federal and state regulations that involve reimbursement, HIPAA privacy and security rules, and fraud, waste, and abuse laws. The position will entail the following duties and responsibility

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Assist the Director of Audit and Compliance in the day-to-day management of the Sinai Business Integrity Program
  • Assist in the implementation of the Business Integrity Program policies and procedures
  • Assist in training and education on compliance-related topics
  • Research to assist the Business Integrity Program on advising stakeholders within the system with regard to compliance-related topics
  • Assist in the execution of investigations in response to reported compliance-related events
  • Assist in the development of the culture of compliance by rounding on employees within the system and educating employees on the existence of the Business Integrity Program

Time Commitment: Flexible scheduling can be arranged but two days a week (with a minimum of four hours a day) is preferred.
