The Council Room, University of Wolverhampton

Unsurprisingly the influx of migrants from Accession States and particularly Poland has been followed by an influx of academic scrutiny into the subject. But as migration from Poland to UK isn’t a new phenomenon, why is it that scholars study something only because it became visible due to liberalization of immigration law? Is legal visibility determining scientific one in such a powerful way? And are we really seeing something qualitatively different now? What particular questions related to identity construction, new migration patterns and pan-EU transnational life strategies can be put in front of that dynamic and largely unexplored area of social and cultural development in Britain? This workshop shall bring together most up-to-date research undertaken in UK and in answering these questions will attempt to develop new concepts and ideas much needed in order to contribute to wider debates about British multiculturalism, immigration and European identity.
