July 2015

Dear Parents

I’m sure you are looking forward to the holiday and spending more time with your children. School holidays are specialtimes to enjoy doing things together as a family.

I’m writing to remind you that a break from school does not mean a break from learning. The brain is like a muscle – it grows stronger with practice.

We know how important maths is to our children's life chances and future success. We also know that parents play a pivotal role in childen’s attitudes and skills in maths. Children who talk about maths at home with their parents and enjoy maths activities have better maths skills and achieve better results.

There are many ways you can support your child over the summer by enjoying some maths games, activities and discussions together. Over the page I’ve given you some guidance as to key things children could be learning over the summer.

One of the ways your child can continue to build maths skills during the holiday is by using Mathletics at least three times a week. Mathletics will continue to be available for Y6 pupils until September. All children will have a variety of activities available to them throughout the summer on Mathletics – including the Concept Search (to learn mathematical vocabulary) and the Problem Solving activities. Check these out together.

Another great resource is the school website. Check out the ‘children’ and ‘home learning’ sections, but also the ‘parent – curriculum – maths at home’ section. You can also see the latest photos of maths learning on the website.

A range of Snap card games with a maths focus, puzzle books, games and watches continue to be sold from the school office if you want to stock up before we break up. Perhaps an Eid present for someone?

By Y3 all children should be able to read/write the time – they won’t be able to do this unless they wear a watch and learn how to use it. This is something you could really help with over the summer.

Children learn better when the learning is fun and part of everyday activities, so again, the summer holiday is a great time for learning.

Make the most of every learning opportunity and have fun learning together.

Any queries/questions – I’m available after school on Thursday, or Friday I’ll be around all day.

Have a great summer!

Yours sincerely

Mrs Hackett
