1) Why did the religious leaders persecute Jesus and wantedHim arrested and killed?

______

______

______

SermonFirst, the religious leaders sought to arrest and slay Jesus because He healed the impotent man at the Pool of Bethesda on the Sabbath.

John 5:16“And therefore did the Jews persecute Jesus, and sought to slay him, because he had done these things on the Sabbath day.”

SermonSecondly, Jesus was calling God his own Father, putting Himself on a level (equal) with God. These pious religious leaders sought an opportunity to kill Jesus, and these words fueled their hatred.

v18“Therefore the Jews sought the more to kill him, because he not only had broken the Sabbath, but said also that God was his Father, making himself equal with God.”

2) Why did the temple police fail to arrest Jesus?

______

______

______

Sermon First, it was not yet Jesus’ time to die. God had ordained an exact time and a specific place for Jesus’ death. Jesus came into the world to give His life a ransom for the many and to die upon the Cross of Calvary as a sacrifice for sin. At this point in the text, Jesus’ death was just six months away, occurring during the Feast of Passover.

v44“And some of them would have taken him; but no man laid hands on him.”

Sermon Secondly, the temple police heard the voice of Jesus and understood his doctrine and teachings. Their minds had been changed and their lives were transformed. No doubt, they were convinced that Jesus was at least a righteous man, if not the Messiah and the Son of God. Jesus’ authoritative statements, coupled with His gracious invitations, impressed the temple police as being far different from the usual rabbinic discourse. The temple police returned to the religious leaders with a powerful testimony.

v46“The officers answered, Never man spake like this man.”

3) Today, what are some of the ways of hearing the voice of the Lord?

______

______

______

Sermon First, we hear the Lord’s voice as He speaks to us in His word. Since the Bible contains the mind of God, it also reveals the will of God. As the Scriptures speak to the believer, they motivate and empower the believer to accomplish the work of God.

Sermon Secondly, we hear the Lord’s voice as He speaks to us through the Holy Spirit. Since the believer is indwelled by the Holy Spirit, the believer is convicted and prompted by the Spirit to behave and conduct his or her life according to the righteousness of God.

Sermon Thankfully, we are saved by faith having accepted the love, power, and authority of Jesus Christ as our personal Lord and Savior.

4) According to the Scriptures, the claim of the Pharisees about no prophetscoming out of Galilee is accurate. [T] or [F]

SermonfalsE, a search of the Scriptures would have revealed that the prophets Jonah (of Gath-Hepher (2Kgs 14:25)), Nahum (of Elkosh (Nahum 1:1)), and possibly Elijah (of Thisbe (1Kgs 17:1)) and Hosea (son of Beeri (Hosea 1:1)) did come from the region of Galilee. There may be more of whom we have no record.

SermonNicodemus spoke up for Jesus and was sharply rebuked and insulted by his fellow Pharisees. The Pharisees’ prejudice and hatred against Jesus were already strong enough to overthrow reason. They accused Nicodemus of being as ignorant as the Galileans. They argued that a prophet does not come out of Galilee, so the Messianic Prophet cannot be a Galilean. Because the Pharisees’ rage was blind, their deep prejudice distorted all facts.

v52“They answered and said unto him, Art thou also of Galilee? Search and look: for out of Galilee arises no prophet.”

John 1:46“And Nathanael said unto him, Can there any good thing come out of Nazareth? Philip saith unto him, Come and see.”
