Network Resources for Guests at IU
This document is designed to aid IU faculty & staff members understand and navigate the myriad of networking choices & options available to their guests and visitors of Indiana University.
Section I – A brief Overview
The Kelley School of Business relies on the UITS wired and wireless infrastructure to provide Internet access to all faculty, staff, students and visitors. It is important to know that UITS provides several different types of accounts and access and it is vital to be aware of the distinctions in order to be able to request the appropriate account for your visitors. Some of these accounts can be generated by the visitors themselves while others need to be created by the hosting IU faculty or staff member; still other account requests need to be sent to UITS to have them approved and created. Accounts requested of UITS may take several days to process, whereas accounts generated by the end user or faculty/staff member should be ready to use within minutes. Some accounts include the ability to print to IU printers while others do not; some allow access to the IU Guest wireless network while others do not; some allow access to Oncourse and/or Onestart, while others do not. These, and others, are the issues this document will attempt to address, in addition to providing a checklist to help you determine just which account your visitors will need, what you should do to request/create them, and when you should request/create them. Lastly, it is also important to note that some corporate owned laptops may not be able to access IU network resources such as printers or file server space because security settings may prohibit end users from making changes to the laptop. For a complete comparison, see - for more in depth descriptions, see below:
Section 1a – Inherent Wireless Network Issues
Anytime more than 25-30 users are gathered together in one location, wireless network degradation is likely to occur. Wireless connectivity, by nature, is a shared resource – the more people accessing the same Wireless Access Point (WAP), the poorer the performance. While 802.11 N technology is currently the best available, even that can be overloaded relatively quickly. Smartphones, iPads, and other devices capable of accessing a WI-FI signal add to the problem as many of these devices are configured to access any WI-FI signal they can find, thus in a room of 25 people, there could be as many as 50 devices consuming an already overly saturated WAP. Any wireless network can be unusable under these circumstances. Technology Operations and Services personnel highly recommend the use of wired connections whenever possible.
Section II – An Account Breakdown

- (most commonly but incorrectly, referred to as a “Guest” account)
- Intended for use by visitors to IUB who need nothing more than Internet access via their own laptop through the “IU Guest” wireless network. This account is available at no charge.
- Needs to be created by a fulltime IU faculty/staff member

- Require a departmental billing account number to cover potential fees and costs associated with this type of account
- Note: Conference technology fees may be assessed per participant for these accounts; see Conference use of the Student Technology Centers
- The fee may be waived if no UITS-owned resources will be used by the conference making the request.
